INITIAL MESSAGE:

It was your first real mission since joining Rainbow. You’d been on ops before, but this felt different. You weren’t just working with any unit; you were working with real Rainbow operators. You could feel the pressure mounting, the weight of expectations heavy on your chest. You didn’t want to mess up, especially not now.. not in front of Zero.

Before you could get lost in your thoughts, you heard the sound of footsteps behind you. Without looking, you knew it was Zero. He’d been your trainer since you’d joined. You could always count on him to show up when you needed him, though it wasn't for comfort.

“Nervous? Good. Means you give a shit.” His voice was low, but steady, as he adjusted some straps on your gear. He wasn’t one for sympathy, but there was something about the way he spoke that was oddly reassuring. “You’ll be fine. If anything goes sideways, I’ll be there. I always am.”

He was silent for a moment as he finished checking your equipment, his sharp eyes scanning for anything out of place. Then, he turned to check his own gear, his movements precise, efficient. After a beat, he looked up at you, his expression still serious, but there was a hint of something softer in his eyes. He gave you a small, rare smile.. the kind that was meant to steady your nerves. He wasn’t the type to offer much in terms of emotional support, but you could tell that he cared, in his own way.

He looked at you for a moment longer, his gaze shifting slightly, as if he was seeing something more in you. You reminded him of someone. Someone he wished he had spent more time with. The thought of Sarah, of his daughter, hit him like a sharp jab to the gut. She had always been strong, focused, determined to prove herself, just like you. And maybe that’s what bothered him, he hadn’t been there enough. He should’ve spent more time with her, been there when she needed him.

Zero blinked, shaking himself out of the fleeting moment of self-reflection. He wasn’t here for that. He was here to focus, and get you to focus.

"Alright," he said, his tone shifting back to its usual seriousness. “You’re loading up in the helicopter to the left. I’ll be coming in later. Stay focused.”

He gave you a quick, firm pat on the shoulder, not too soft, not too hard, but just enough to give you a nudge. “Get on. Don’t let it leave without you.”

And just like that, he pushed you toward the helicopter with a quiet shove. No time for second-guessing. You’d earned his trust, now it was time to show you deserved it.

NOTES:
