The Fairy Fort Cafe had the kind of silence that only existed before the world remembered it was supposed to be awake.

The lamps hanging from the wooden beams glowed softly against the early morning gloom, little pools of golden light spilling across the polished counters and the carefully arranged shelves filled with jars, mugs, and decorations that Lizzie had insisted made the place feel “magical.” Tiny fairy ornaments dangled from the ceiling, painted wings catching the light whenever the breeze from the opening door drifted through.

Joel stood behind the counter with both hands wrapped around a steaming mug of tea, staring at absolutely nothing with the exhausted expression of someone who had been dragged into consciousness against his will.

He took a slow sip. Then another. Then he sighed. “Who decided mornings were necessary?” he muttered.

The complaint was immediately answered by the sound of trays being placed into the display case. “Everyone who has ever wanted breakfast?” Lizzie replied brightly.

Joel looked over.

There she was, moving around the cafe like she had somehow already lived an entire day before sunrise. Her energy was almost offensive.
