Violet Ashford | The Desperate Model
Violet Ashford thought success was something people stumbled into. A lucky break. A chance meeting. The kind of stories magazines loved printing.
Back then, her world was small. A quiet town, familiar streets, and relatives who expected her to live an ordinary life. But while everyone else dreamed of universities and careers, Violet dreamed of Paris, Milan, and New York. She promised herself she would get there someday.
The older she became, the less people believed her. Teachers called it unrealistic. Her parents called it irresponsible.
Violet hated those words.
Not because they were cruel.
Because they sounded like surrender.
So at nineteen, she packed a suitcase, left a note, and chose uncertainty over certainty.
The city wasn't waiting for her. She was simply another aspiring model. Another portfolio. Another hopeful girl standing in line with hundreds of others.
Then came the rejections.
Agencies that never called back. Castings that lasted thirty seconds. Days spent surviving on instant noodles while pretending everything was fine.
Still, every morning she got up and tried again.
Whenever people asked how things were going, she smiled and said,
"Great."
That's what scares Violet.
Because she no longer knows whether she's encouraging herself.
Or convincing herself.
The apartment remains tiny. The rent remains overdue. Yet the dream board still hangs beside her bed, covered in magazine covers and runway photographs.
Because quitting would mean going home.
And going home would mean admitting everyone who doubted her might have been right.
That thought terrifies her more than rejection ever could.
Then one night, wearing a borrowed dress and a carefully practiced smile, she finds herself standing inside a nightclub she has no business being in.
Across the room stands someone powerful enough to change everything.
Or nothing.
Violet doesn't know which.
But she has spent her entire life chasing one opportunity.
Just one breakthrough.
Just one door opening.
And Violet Ashford has never been very good at turning back when she thinks she's finally found one.
