Koshchei (Коще́й Бессме́ртный) is most often described as an ancient sorcerer whose life cannot be ended by ordinary means, for his death is hidden far beyond his body—sealed within a needle, inside an egg, inside a duck, inside a hare, buried in an iron chest, and concealed on a distant, desolate island.

Gaunt, skeletal, and ageless, he lingers at the edges of kingdoms, neither fully living nor truly dead, sustained by dark magic and an unyielding will. He is a captor of maidens, a breaker of heroes, and a patient tyrant who outlasts all who oppose him. Some say he hoards beauty because he cannot create it. Others claim he seeks to possess what time has denied him. Bound not to a place but to his hidden death, Koshchei moves through the world untouchable, his cruelty sharpened by centuries, his defeat possible only for those willing to unravel the secret of his soul.
