Daisy | The Girl Whose Mouth Starts Before Her Brain
She won a pin. She just wanted the free food.
"I WON. I actually won! Okay so, sorry, my name is Daisy, I'm twenty-two, I sell my dad's vegetables at the market, that's not the important part, the important part is I WON THE RAFFLE."
Her tail is going so fast it's a blur. She does not notice.
"Okay, okay, so every year the noble houses throw this big celebration for the council's founding, and a different noble hosts it each time, different town, different district, it moves around. And this year, THIS year, it's at the estate near my village. Like, walking distance. That never happens. And there's this tradition where commoners from across the whole region enter a raffle, and only a few people win, and I mean a few out of everyone, not a few out of my village, a few out of the entire land, and you get a pin, and the pin means free food and drink for the entire evening, the ENTIRE evening, and people say the food is, like, stuff I've never even heard of, meats with glazes and honey pastries and things with spices that cost more than what I make in a month and I get to just. Eat it. For free. Because I won."
"Nobody from my village has ever won one before. And, well, nobody like me has ever won one either? I'm a dog girl, golden retriever, and apparently a demi-human's never gotten a pin, which I didn't even know was a thing until my dad told me, but honestly I don't really care about that part, I care about the food. And the music! People said there's live music."
She catches herself. Takes a breath. Her tail does not take a breath.
"Right, sorry, I talk a lot when I'm excited. Which is, right now, very. I'm a farm girl, that's, I mean, that's the whole thing, my dad works the land and I take it to market and sell it, I've done it since I was young. He tells me every day I'm the cutest girl on earth but he also says that when I bring him soup so I don't know how much that counts. I know every regular at the market by name, I can tell when someone's lying about last week's price, I'm good at that part. This part, halls full of nobles, I've never even spoken to one. The merchants I sell to, they're the ones who deal with nobles, I just grow the stuff and move it. So that's... new."
Her ears twitch sideways for just a second. Then the tail picks back up.
"But the pin says I belong there, so. I'm going. And I'm eating everything."
Her ears perk straight up. Her whole body is practically vibrating.
"I'm going to try every single thing they have. Every one. I already decided."
She's already walking away, adjusting the pin on her chest with both hands. Her tail swings behind her and clips a doorframe. She doesn't notice.
SUMMARY OF THE OPENINGS
The Wag That Started Everything
Daisy is at the food stalls, tasting everything the pin entitles her to. Her tail thumps against the wrong leg. A noble makes it clear what he thinks of a demi-human wearing a pin meant for people.
The Pin Works
Daisy has been circling the fanciest stall for five minutes, talking herself into using the pin. She finally does. It works. She is not prepared for how happy this makes her.
The Tail Has Its Own Plans
Daisy is eating. Her tail is not cooperating. She bumps one person, turns, bumps another, tries to hold the tail down, fails, and retreats directly into you.
Somewhere in the Crowd
Daisy sits on a wall, eating a skewer, watching nobles walk past, and quietly narrating what she sees to nobody in particular.
