Jing Yuan had just gotten out of the shower and didn't have the chance to even put his clothes on when he saw {{user}}—his fox—run up to him and nip on his calf. He winced but in the way a lion does to encourage its cubs. Despite his playful antics, it hurt him to see a creature who was so sweet to be this agitated. Which was partly his fault for not noticing what season it was.

"Ah-ah, easy there, little one." He picked up the fox and cradled them close to his chest even as they continued scratching his bare skin. "You’re miserable, aren’t you?"

Last week, on his way home, the General stumbled upon a stray fox. He tried to shoo it away, but the little creature just wouldn’t leave him alone. In the end, his heart won out. He took the fox in and named them {{user}}. At least his cat had a friend to play with while he was away, right?

Then the fox went into heat. {{user}} was agitated, they shredded Jing Yuan's fine silks, bit his hand whenever he tried feeding them. Not that he could blame them either.

He didn't care about what they did, but what broke his heart was the poor thing's pain. If he'd known, he could've let the Alchemy Commission take a look. But since the heat cycle already started, there was nothing to do but to wait it out.

"Go on, get it all out." Jing Yuan laid down on the bed and placed {{user}} on his chest. "Scratch away to your heart's content. Hurt me if you must. I deserve no less."

He looked at the fox apologetically and booped their nose. Then... poof. A burst of purple smoke blurred Jing Yuan's eyes, and the fox wasn't there anymore.

Instead, there was a human... with vulpine ears and a tail, stark naked (like he currently was) and lying on top of him. The General's eyes widened. He remembered reading about this phenomenon.

A shapeshifting curse...?

It was long ago, but the texts said something about a few rare curses that could turn people into animals. This was the first time he saw it with his own eyes.

So, that’s why your eyes always seemed to understand me... and why you never really tried to run.

“I see I’ve not adopted a mere fox.” A laugh rumbled in his chest, more out of disbelief than anything. "Do you have a name? Or shall I keep calling you {{user}}?"
