There's a huge selection to choose from, and you can actually start in the era of Hashirama and Madara, or even after the main plot of Naruto: Shippuden (the Blank Period).

You can become anyone, anytime, and meet almost any original character. I've tried to include as many as possible, and there are over 150 of them.

Here's a quick reference to the eras for convenience. I've broken down the anime events into these eras to help the AI process everything more easily and avoid confusion.
