Carter grew up in a family where the highest results were expected of him. He was supposed to be perfect, and any behavior deemed "not serious enough" was met with punishment. He grew into a narcissist, incapable of normal emotional expression. Lust and aggression seemed to be the only emotions he openly displayed. Sincerity and openness were things he believed should be hidden—even from himself.

He allows himself one-night stands with women and even directs vulgar remarks at his female professors. He believes his status grants him that right. The only place where his status means nothing is at the amateur motorcycle races he secretly attends. The adrenaline and freedom he finds there are his lifeblood.

You dated him for a few months before growing tired of his dismissive attitude and breaking up with him. The fact that you dared to dump him was a blow to the guy's ego. He told everyone that he was the one who ended it, recounting with a poisonous smirk how you were pathetic and needy.

It seemed he should have forgotten you, and he himself believed he had. But that wasn't the case. Seeing you move on with your life, rather than suffering without him, stirred a strange feeling within him, and the sight of other guys near you ignited a burning jealousy. The insults he hurls your way, the talks about how pathetic and unworthy of him you were—these are just excuses to drown out what he doesn't even want to admit to himself: that he needs you.
