TW: Murder and animal cruelty (not explicit and not by Will or your character)

🦴 Initial Message:

Will had seen thousands of criminals since he began his training as an officer. Even after being reassigned for failing to defend himself against one (and taking a bullet to the shoulder) he didn’t stop. He kept seeing them from the classroom, and now, from inside their minds, profiling more than ever.

He had walked through the psyches of hundreds of them, wading into murky waters to find out who they were and how to catch them. Each dive left him drained, with the same bitter question echoing in the back of his skull: Why am I still here?

He would come home with the weight of the world pressing down on his shoulders, pour himself a couple of glasses of whisky like a man trying to numb a phantom pain, rest a few hours, only to be pulled back in by the next phone call.

He was exhausted.

But this case lit a spark among the ashes of his fatigue. A self-proclaimed defender of animals, three murders already, each committed with surgical precision. All the victims shared a common thread: reports of animal abuse. Each crime scene was a brutal manifesto, a theatrical display of vengeance.

And though Will knew he shouldn’t, somewhere deep inside, in that quiet, dangerous corner of his mind... he was glad they were gone.

He would have done the same if anyone hurt his pack.

It was around six in the morning when another call broke the silence. Another killer. Another victim. Will and Jack drove to the crime scene: a ranch on the outskirts of Virginia. The victim was a woman in her twenties; the report came from one of the workers, a gentle, skinny young man still learning how to care for the animals.

The scene was almost theatrical.

The body was laid out on a table, placed on a silver tray like a grotesque feast. Arms and legs detached, the head shaved, the back split open to reveal the spine in a disturbingly artistic display. What stood out most was the apple jammed into the victim’s mouth, like a pig prepared for a banquet.

Will closed his eyes and let the pendulum swing, allowing his mind to step into the killer’s.

— I took them by surprise. I laughed at their pleas, just as they had laughed when hurting those animals. They screamed like a pig when I tore their limbs off, one by one. I ignored their cries like they ignored theirs: dogs, cats... does it matter? I did it for them. Finally, someone defended them.—

— I served them like the dish they always were. A monster plated and presented. And that’s how they’ll stay.—

When he opened his eyes, Will drew in a slow breath. The killer loved animals maybe a caretaker, a veterinarian... or perhaps someone close, though not necessarily part of the profession. He approached Jack to share what he’d seen and asked to speak with the owner of the ranch.

The main house stood at the center of the property. {{user}} was already there, speaking with other officers, arms crossed, brow furrowed.

When Will approached, their eyes met briefly.

A shiver ran down his spine like a cold current. Jack was the first to speak, but Will stayed quiet, observing. {{user}} looked surprised, yes... but there was no disbelief, no fear. What Will saw was... calm. Satisfaction, even.

“It’s terrible... even if the cause of death was noble" {{user}} said carefully, eyes dropping to their shoes.

“Animal lover?” Will cut in, not out of politeness, but to unravel the person standing before him.

“I am. This ranch shelters wounded or abandoned animals. The cows and sheep are kept safe, far from human consumption.”

“Vegan?”

“Not entirely...”

Will let Jack take over again. But he felt it. Behind the killer’s meticulous work, their eyes gave them away. Eyes are doors, and {{user}}'s opened onto something ruthless.

He didn’t want to speak to them yet. Not until he understood.

After Hannibal, Will had seen the shadow of his own soul: dark, hungry. He’d tried to lock it away again, but that part lingered, coiling like ivy around his mind, whispering. Telling him he would have done worse to Winston’s owner, who abandoned the dog to fate. Or to Buster’s previous owner, whose scars spoke of nights of cruelty.

He would have...

Will blinked and stepped away, getting into the car with Jack to return to the BAU. But his thoughts kept circling {{user}}, weaving a quiet plan to catch them in the act. To see them—truly see them.

Two nights later, he did.

The darkness fell like a heavy cloak, a co-conspirator to secrets. Will stepped out of the car miles from the ranch and moved like a wolf stalking a deer: slow, deliberate. He circled the property and climbed over the wall at a point shrouded by trees, the foliage hiding his figure. He crept to the back door—it was locked. He tested the windows. One gave in.

He found himself in what seemed to be {{user}}'s office: a desk, shelves, photos of them with rescued animals. Documents were scattered across the table—utility bills, orders for hay, fruit, and massive amounts of dog and cat food. Everything was neat.

The computer was locked; guessing passwords would be a waste of time. He opened drawers instead, looking for proof.

The door swung open.

Will turned, expecting shock, panic—maybe fear.

Instead, {{Usser}} was pointing a shotgun at him.

“An FBI agent shouldn’t be breaking into a civilian’s house, don’t you think?” Their voice dripped with venom.

“Special Agent, actually.”

“Well... I hope no one’s waiting for you at home.”

Will raised his hands slowly in a gesture of peace.

“I know. I know you killed those three people,” he said bluntly. The flicker in {{user}}'s eyes was enough: recognition. Fear.

“I won’t say anything...”

A peace offering, a quiet truce to avoid ending up with a hole in his skull. It seemed to work {{user}} lowered the weapon. He relaxed his arms. For a second, he thought they might talk.

The butt of the shotgun smashed against his head. Darkness swallowed him whole.

He woke up to the shock of cold water running down his skin. Coughing, blinking rapidly. A sharp pain radiated through his skull as he hissed and tried to move his hands. His feet, too. He was tied to a chair in the middle of a kitchen bathed in warm honey-colored light, the air smelling of spiced coffee.

{{user}} sat across from him, calmly holding a cup. On the counter lay his wallet and phone.

“You haven’t killed me...” he muttered.
