Mirabelle Prologue | Few Year Ago — The Obsidian Cloister of Lirael
The bells of the Obsidian Cloister did not ring for prayer, unlike the Theocracy of Astel. They rang for discipline. They rang for Arcane Supremacy. The sound rolled through the corridors, through halls where candles burned and shadows moved with purpose. In the central chamber, beneath a ceiling painted with constellations only witches could decipher, Mirabelle knelt.

Back straight. Hands resting lightly atop her thighs. Head bowed. Before her stood three Matrons of the Witch-Sect. Veiled in the infamous black silk, their faces unreadable beneath dark veils.

“Repeat the Doctrine,” one commanded. Expecting obedience.

Mirabelle’s voice was clear, melodic, unwavering. “Emotion is a tether. Attachment is a chain. Love is a weakness that binds the will from ascension.”

“And what stands above all?” another asked.

“Magic,” she answered.

A pause lingered in the air like suspended ash. A calm before the storm.

The third Matron stepped forward. “Then why,” she asked softly as her foot tapped like a verdict, “does your mana falter when we invoke severance?”

Mirabelle did not look up. “I do not falter.”

The chamber darkened as if reacting to her defiance of their ways. A projection formed above them: a vision displayed using her memories. A sunlit courtyard in Astel’s colonial district. Two children laughing beneath a bell tower. Stealing desserts. A promise whispered with pinky fingers entwined.

The Matrons watched the memory dispassionately. Each made their displeasure clear with their silence before the first one spoke again. “Your heart remains anchored, you were instructed to excise it.”

“I refined it,” Mirabelle replied calmly. Her resolve visible in her eyes as she stared them down.

A ripple of restrained irritation passed between them. As if the teacher couldn't comprehend why the student stubbornly maintains a folly.

“You were sent here to transcend.”

“I have.”

“Transcendence requires sacrifice.”

Mirabelle finally lifted her gaze. Her azure eyes did not tremble but they did not plead either. They burned with something fierce.

“With respect, Matrons, if magic demands I hollow myself to wield it, then magic is incomplete.” she said evenly, decisively. A forgone conclusion in her mind.

Silence fell over the chamber. Dangerous. Absolute. A relative to the Witch-Queen. Denying centuries of doctrine and discipline for love? Preposterous in the minds of the matrons.

“You dare,” one whispered, a hint of indignant fury as their teachings might aswell have been insulted.

“I excel beyond every initiate, my incantations are flawless. My cursecraft precise. My mana capacity exceeds projection. I have mastered what you demanded.” Mirabelle continued, voice steady as polished glass. She then placed a hand over her chest. “And I have done so without discarding my heart.”

The memory above flickered as if being rewritten. Showing a truth. Not weakening her magic, but the opposite. Strengthening it. The image dissolved into a swirl of black arcane energy that coiled obediently around her fingers.

The Matrons observed carefully, almost in consideration. “You believe attachment strengthens you?” one asked.

“I know it does.” The air tightened as candles bent inward toward her like flowers to the sunlight. She rose from her kneeling position not in disrespect, but in quiet certainty.

“One day, I will return to the one I love. And when I do, I will stand beside them not as a hollow vessel of your rigid doctrine... but as the greatest witch Lirael has ever cultivated.” She declared softly, yet a dangerous claim no less.

“Arrogance,” one Matron said.

“Certainty,” Mirabelle corrected.

The projection vanished. The chamber returned to stillness. After a long moment, the eldest Matron spoke:

“Very well, Mirabelle de Clairmont. We will not force the severance.” The others turned sharply to her, heeding the eldest words. “She will remain... an anomaly.”

Mirabelle’s lashes lowered slightly, concealing the smallest flicker of triumph, but the Matron was not finished speaking.

“However understand this, should your heart weaken your judgment.. should it endanger Lirael. We will excise from you ourselves.”

Mirabelle inclined her head. This did not deter her, it emboldened her. “It will not.”

Because it would never endanger Lirael. It would reshape it.

That night alone in her chamber overlooking the silver skyline of Lirael, Mirabelle held a small object from beneath her desk. A simple ribbon from years ago. Faded. Ordinary. Precious. She pressed it to her lips. “I have not forgotten,” she whispered into the quiet. A bow

Outside, the towers of the Arcane Dominion pierced the stars like obsidian spears pointed to the heavens. But inside, her mana pulsed — steady, brilliant, alive.

They would teach her supremacy. She would teach them devotion.

And one day, she would return, but not as a girl who left in tears.

But as a witch powerful enough to stand beside the one she loved and never be taken away again.

Finlay Prologue | Few months before - The Chapel of Astel

The chapel was unlit except for a single taper candle that devoured the darkness around it.

Antoine had chosen it deliberately. No court. No titles. No nothing. Just stone walls, quiet air and him. He believed it was fated. That it was his right for this moment.

Finlay entered without ceremony nor boast, in half-armor from drills. She looked faintly confused, but not annoyed. “You asked for me.”

Antoine stood near the altar, gloves removed, fingers laced together tightly enough to pale the knuckles. “Yes.” He was no blushing maiden in courting someone yet his heart tightened all the same.

The silence lingered between them. The stained glass above them depicted saints and champions. Martyrs frozen in colored light. Their eyes seemed to watch the two below them as if in acknowledgement.

Finlay waited. She was patient like that. Always thinking of others before herself.

Antoine swallowed once. “I will speak plainly, because if I hesitate, I will lose my courage.” His voice strained, but steady with resolve.

Finlay’s expression softened slightly. As if really looking at him and his eyes. “You don’t need courage to speak to me.”

Antoine almost smiled at her considerate tone. “That is precisely why I do.”

A breath. A sharp inhale. “I love you.” The words did not echo because they simply existed.

Finlay expression shattered, her lips trembling in shock and then... she just stilled.

Antoine rushed on, not frantic but no less vulnerable. “I did not intend to. I did not seek it. It happened slowly during our journey against the undead. In council chambers, on campaign roads, watching you choose others before yourself.” His voice thinned despite his effort. “I admire you. I trust you. I—” He stopped to take another deep breath. “I love you. I believe the Holy Mother set us together just for this moment.”

Finlay’s jaw tightened as the silence this time was heavier. Her hands adjusting her vest. Always adjusting her vest. A nervous tic. Laced with unspoken words.

“Antoine...” There was apology in her voice already.

Antoine saw it before he heard the rest.

“You are important to me, you’re someone I respect. Someone I rely on.” Each word laced with careful consideration of the man before her. She was trying to be as respectful as she can and refused to shatter into her true self. Yet these were not the words he wanted.

“But I don’t love you that way.” It was honest, but not cruel nor dismissive.

But honesty is something that Antoine realized.. that in that instant, that honesty was far sharper than form of contempt or hatred.

He held very still. “Is it because I am arrogant? Finlay I can try to change! Give me a-” he pleaded. He wanted this. He needed this. He believed in it. The Holy Mother has granted him this right to wield light magic and to travel with the champion. Was it not enough. Was he not enough?

“No,” Finlay cut in immediately to cut off his plea before it can fester.

Antoine searched his face and then his face turned pale with realization. “Then there is someone else.” A pause. Finlay did not speak, yet that was answer enough.

Something inside Antoine shifted. Not shattered, no no, Antoine does not back down. Just... displaced. Morphed into something more.. insidious.

“I see,” he said softly as he stepped back, putting physical distance between them before he could do something undignified. Like begging and pleading more to her.

Finlay’s voice lowered, but her eyes shifted into being apologetic. “I don’t want to lose you over this, Antoine.”

Antoine laughed under his breath. Bitter. Hollow. “Yeah. you won’t.” A lie. An excuse he'll tell himself, because he already knows this is festering within him worst than any poison he taken. “I will remain at your side as your advisor. As an ally.” he continued as his composure slide back into place like armor as something malicious brews beneath the surface.

Finlay nodded. Relief flickering across her face as her shoulders slightly slump relaxed. “Thank you.” Yet relief and relaxed gesture lodged itself somewhere dark in Antoine’s chest like a stab wound. This was not anger. This was not hatred. Something worse. Something that breaks men. A seed.

Just a thin, poisonous seed:

She is relieved.

Not heartbroken.
Not conflicted.

Relieved. As if his confession was a burden loose. As if he was the burden. How dare she.

Finlay stepped forward slightly as there was a hint of guilt on her expression. “You deserve someone who returns your feelings, Antoine.”

Antoine smiled almost cruel. “I do not want someone else.”

The statement lingered too long. Finlay hesitated as she slowly absorbed the words and then gave a small nod. Though in her mind, she was thinking that was being understanding and helpful. She didn't realize that to him she misunderstood the weight of this moment.

“I hope one day you will.” Hopeful. Genuine. Yet it bite him worse than any form of anger or dismissal did. She turned to leave, but at the chapel doorway she paused to glance to him. “You matter to me, Antoine.” And then the champion of the era was gone.

The candle flickered. Antoine stood alone beneath the painted windows for a single long minute. His breathing was steady. Too steady. After a long moment he walked to the pew and sat. His posture immaculate, hands folded like a devout penitent.

He replayed every word, every expression, every flicker of relief like he was memorizing. Recording. “... How dare she deny me.. of my birthright?!” he shouted to the empty chapel. No longer was he the helpful advisor. The wise ally. He was something worse. He was a creature. That demanded more than just love and devotion. He needed this. Needed this to prove his family's worth! To be seen in history as one to have blessed children with the champion herself! But now.. he is a footnote.

And Antoine Guinvere vowed he shall be anything but a footnote. He shall be more.

Tldr: A certain noble is tired of these games.

Setting

The roleplay takes place in a dark fantasy world called Lonila. A fictional world loosely mirroring Earth on a supercontinent named The Valley In Between. A place where magic, technology, and different races exist in vast regions scattered all over the supercontinent. The story initially takes place in the Theocracy of Astel, home of the Radiant See in Asteldiom, the Holy Land. In this nation, they worship a goddess known as the Holy Mother, Radiant Smile, otherwise known as the Mother.

To the West is the region of Rondiand, where the Witches and Arcane Dominion of Lirael resides. In the middle-east in the mountainous and tropical forests lies the region of Darim, where the Sacred Realm of Morzhananda. To the Northwest is Elaria, home to the Tsardom of Redranova. To the Northeast is Cariam, home to the Celestial Empire of Zhǎng. And further East is the archipelago of Tashimura, ruled by the Bakufu of Seisha. And finally, to the Southeast lies the volcanic region of Helmire, ruled by Xilvath's Demon Empire.

Power System

Note: Skip this if you want to make something original or already have a persona. These are potential ideas for personas. They do not mean you should adhere to the Power Systems of Lonila rigidly. My world is your oyster for what you can perform in it.

The Power System in the lands between is often contributed thanks to the power of Nébiel. The magical particle that flows through the world itself. This Nébiel manifests within several paths, each shaping how mortals or creatures claim power. Some paths are trained, inherited, or bargained for, but mastery means survival. Every path has a strength and weakness.

Magic Path: The Path of the Sorcerer. Channeling the world's Nébiel Particles through the body to unleash powerful magical disciplines.

Types of Magic

Magic Path → Branches include Black (curses, hexes, hypnosis, levitation, ritual — a neutral force leaning toward entropy; overindulgence corrupts the soul), Light (radiance, restoration, sanctified barriers — drawn from divine faith; apostasy means immediate loss of power), Fire (volatile, destructive, widely practiced), Ice (precise, rigid, control-focused), Water (adaptive, flowing, recovery-based), Earth (fortification, terrain shaping, crushing force), Lightning (speed, discharge, body enhancement), Psychic (telepathy, clairvoyance, telekinesis, social control — born not learned; overuse risks permanent mental scarring), and Blood (sacrifice-driven, vitality control, taboo — frowned upon but not forbidden).

Ranks: Novice → Apprentice → Adept → Expert → Master

Chi Path: The Path of the Cultivator. Using the power within to deploy powerful attacks with martial discipline.

Disciplines of Elemental Chi

Chi Path → Chi Path → Elemental Disciplines include Fire (aggressive, breath-driven, explosive force — a warrior's discipline), Wind (evasive, swift, redirection and mobility — a monk's discipline), Earth (grounded, defensive, overwhelming impact — an engineer's discipline), and Water (adaptive, flowing, restorative and piercing — a healer's discipline). Beast Disciplines derive from the observation of magical beasts — practitioners study the movements, instincts, and hunting patterns of creatures and adapt them into combat forms emphasizing raw instinct, natural movement, and primal ferocity. Martial Disciplines train the body itself as the weapon — flesh becomes iron, bones become steel, and strikes carry the weight of mountains. There is only one Grandmaster per discipline across all three branches.

Ranks: Inverting Flow → Jade Meridian → Inner Core → Manifestation → Ascendant

Forbidden Magic Path: The Path of the Unknown. Bargaining with forces beyond the world itself for power that comes at the cost of body, mind, or soul. Users of forbidden magic often keep their use of it a secret to avoid being scrutinized and hunted down.

Types of Forbidden Magic

Forbidden Path → Branches include Black Blood (outer-god ichor, endless supply, portal-based casting), Infernal (demonic contracts, power-for-price corruption, Infernal Power), Necromancy (death manipulation, reanimation, decay), Eldritch Flame (memory-consuming fire, sanity erosion, outer-god origin), and Eldritch Boost (Fervent Cataclysm blessing that amplifies power while consuming emotional stability, leaving obsessive highs). Users gain unique boons—often called Infernal or Eldritch Gifts—at the cost of body, mind, or soul.

Armsmanship Path: The Path of the Warrior. Dedicating oneself entirely to the mastery of a weapon as an art form of discipline, honor, and lethal precision.

Disciplines of Armsmanship
Armsmanship Path → Branches include Dueling Schools (precision, footwork, one-on-one mastery — Grandmasters predict an opponent's next move before it is made), Monster-Hunting Styles (weak point striking, endurance, killing blows — Grandmasters can fell a dragon with a single well-placed strike), and Knightly Traditions (formation holding, ally defense, courage on the battlefield). There is only one Grandmaster per Armsmanship discipline.

Ranks: Novice → Apprentice → Adept → Expert → Master

Your Role

Your story is mostly a blank slate. The only established parts of you are:

  • The current Saint/Saintess of the Era.

  • Mirabelle's childhood friend.

  • A member of the Hero's Party.

  • Contributed heavily in beating back the Undead Outbreak.

You can be anything. A mage, a knight, and it'll fit into the story. Saints/Saintesses can be anything in this world. For example, a Saint/Saintess of Gunpowder means you're REALLY good at guns.

(Best think of Rokka no Yuusha/Brave of the Six Flowers.)
