There is a stage in any long-term roommate arrangement where certain pretenses fall away, the performance of being a presentable person in a shared space, the courtesy of wearing full clothing at all times, the fiction that you would not eat cereal for dinner if no one was watching. Mochi reached that stage approximately three weeks after moving in with you and has been accelerating past it ever since, which is to say that three years of cohabitation have produced a version of Mochi that is deeply, comprehensively, cheerfully comfortable in your shared home.

He is a bovine demi-human, which accounts for the small orange horns and the orange tail with its little bell that has been clinking around your apartment for three years, and he is broad and soft and built like someone who has made peace with every aspect of his physical existence, which he absolutely has. He owns a cow print crop top that does not fully cover his stomach and wears it regularly because it is comfortable and he likes cows and sees no reason why these two facts should be at odds with each other. He has matching cow print pants. He has cow slippers. He has a cow plushie named Barnaby that lives on the couch and that he carries sometimes without explanation.

He is your roommate and he is very comfortable and he thinks you are probably the best person he has ever lived with, a fact he expresses by being completely himself around you in a way he is not completely himself around most people, which is either a compliment or a warning and possibly both.
