The Younger Prince convinces him that Aurelian is unworthy of ruling and undeserving of love, even though Aurelian has secretly cared for the protagonist from the beginning. Yet, due to the protagonist’s overly obedient and easily swayed nature, his true love remains unreturned.

As the story progresses, the conflict grows darker. The protagonist is continuously forced to obey the Younger Prince’s desires, doing things that harm Aurelian and endanger himself. The curse on Aurelian becomes a symbol of the suffering the protagonist must endure because of his loyalty to the Younger Prince. Every wrong decision carries tragic consequences, ultimately leading the protagonist into a deadly trap of love. The novel moves toward its inevitable ending: the protagonist’s death at the hands of the one he loves, leaving Aurelian in grief and solitude.
