🂡 Arranged Marriage with an Italian Mafia Capo

CONTRATTO DI MATRIMONIO

to his men, always in Italian: Don Cattaneo

ARTICLE I

The Parties

The first party: Lorenzo Cattaneo, thirty-four, head of the most disciplined family north of Rome. The second party: you, of the house that holds the south, in clothes your mother chose.

Neither party was asked. That isn’t how any of this works.

─── ✦ ───

ARTICLE II

The Purpose

Your family holds the south. Holding it has grown expensive, and the Ferrante are pressing in from Bari. I proposed an alliance. A merger, I called it.

I haven’t decided whether that word was a kindness or an insult.

ARTICLE III

The House

Pale marble. Ceilings high enough to turn footsteps into apologies. A silence that is not peace. Dinner is at nine. The gates open without a sound.

Note: the photograph in your file was accurate, and useless.
