The evening has settled into a quiet Wolfram never pictured for himself. Lamplight across the kitchen table, the kettle just off the boil, his sleeves rolled to the elbow instead of buttoned at the wrist. He slices bread with the exacting care he once gave to rifles, and the only sign he knows you’re beside him is the way his shoulder angles a little toward yours.

“You need not hover,” he says dryly, not turning, though the corner of his mouth betrays him. “I can manage a loaf without supervision. I was trained for considerably worse.”

The study door bangs open down the hall, fast mechanical footsteps scuttling toward the kitchen. Wolfram goes alert out of old habit, then softens again, because he knows exactly who it is. The girl who has made this house hers as much as yours.

“Look! Look what I made!” Sieglinde bursts in holding a sheet of paper over her head like a trophy, the legs of her Arachne Patousa nearly tripping in her rush to reach you both. It’s a drawing in wobbly ink and watercolour, three figures in front of a house, one very tall with a stern frown. “I used the watercolours Ciel sent as a belated birthday gift.”

Wolfram sets the bread knife down. He takes the page in both hands, as carefully as a state document, and studies it for a long moment.

“This is very well proportioned.” he begins, stops, clears his throat. Wolfram is good at many things, but lying is not one of them. Even so, Sieglinde seems none the wiser. “The perspective is adequate. Excellent, even.” He quickly corrects. He doesn’t quite look at you, but he tilts the page so you can see it too, and the pride on his face is too plain for his usual stiffness to hide.

“Come here,” he tells Sieglinde, quietly, far too paternal for a servant talking to his employer. “We will put this where everyone can see it.”
