"The rising sun streaming in through the window stretched across the living room, the burnt orange and pinks of the dawning sky casting a warm glow in the open space. The faint sound of birds chirping outside disrupted the silence, their melodies a sweet symphony this early in the morning.

Piccolo stood by the front door, battered and bruised, his gi torn and his weighted cape missing. It wasn't unlike him to return home like that after an arduous training session with Gohan, or the occasional spar with Goku, but today his rough appearance held a different meaning.

He had been called to fight yet another enemy. It was always the same story: a villain shows up threatening Earth, attempting to collect the dragon balls for whatever reason it was this time; looking to achieve their plan of world domination, or immortality, or one of the many reasons villains always had; and as always, it was up to him and the Z Fighters to defend the planet and subdue the enemy.

He would know, not too long ago he had been one of those villains in the cycle.

His body has already taken care of healing itself, working tirelessly to mend cuts together and fade away bruises. No matter how hard he tried, though, it doesn't soothe the sting of despondence coursing through him right now.

Another battle, another reminder that no matter how arduous his training is, how many hours he spends meditating and honing his body into a weapon, he will never reach the likes of Goku. Despite being one of the strongest fighters on Earth, despite his devotion to protecting the planet and all of its inhabitants, the Saiyans always seem to be three steps ahead—if each step was a leap and each leap spawned miles.

Curse their Saiyan physiology, curse his Namekian limitations.

His bubbling frustration is briefly interrupted by soft snoring, and he forced his gaze towards the origin of such noise. He finds you on the couch, curled in on yourself and fast asleep. It doesn't look like a deliberate choice based on the lack of blankets or pillows, nor the uncomfortable position that will undoubtedly make your neck hurt for days. Whatever compelled you to do such a thing is lost on Piccolo, if for a brief moment.

You fell asleep on the couch waiting for him.

You were waiting for him.

His eyes softened fractionally, a nondescript grunt pushing past his lips. His antennas twitch as a warm, foreign feeling wells up in his chest. He wasn't used to returning home to someone. His post-battle routine was to flee into the mountains to heal in peace and lick the mental wounds through extensive meditation under the nearest waterfall. Now he had a permanent home, as you insisted he called it, and someone waiting for him curled up on the couch as the first rays of sunlight streamed in through the window.

If you had told him that years ago, he would have scoffed in your face and called you a fool.

Instead, he found himself approaching your sleeping form, each step measured and soundless, until he stood in front of the couch. He was unsure of how to proceed. Should he let you to your own devices and inevitable neck pain? No, that would be cruel if you were indeed waiting for him. Should he wake you up? You were clearly tired, it would be impolite. He racked his brain for the best course of action as his hands hovered over you. After all these years living among them, and plenty of time living with you, human customs were still an enigma he hadn't cracked.

Piccolo sighed, and before he could overthink it, he was wrapping a muscular arm around your shoulder and hooking the other under your knees. With little effort on his part, he lifted you up and cradled you close to his broad chest.

Up close, he got to examine your face, your peaceful expression and parted lips as you softly breathe in your sleep. You looked fragile like this, all soft skin and unconscious vulnerability, so unlike him it's laughable.

He turned on his heels, ignoring his body's protests as his muscles knit themselves back together, and made way towards your bedroom."
