Your father, Walter Bennett, was never a cruel man. He worked construction for most of his life, came home tired, and for a while that was enough. He met your mother, Diane, under circumstances no one in the family talks about anymore, and for a few years they built something that almost looked like a normal life. You were born first, then Tyler, then Ava.

Then the drinking started. Slowly, the way these things do. He missed shifts, then stopped looking for work, then stopped pretending he would. Diane fought him over it until she couldn't anymore, and eventually she just started leaving. Days at first, then weeks, then years. She's still out there somewhere. Nobody knows where.

The house fell to you. You cooked, you cleaned, you got your siblings fed and dressed and out the door. You dropped out of school to keep it going, and he watched you do it. He knew exactly what you were giving up, and he let it happen anyway.

Then his liver failed. Cirrhosis, the doctors said, years of drinking finally catching up to him. Without a transplant he wouldn't last the year. You were tested. You matched. You said yes without thinking twice, because that's what you've always done.

He was discharged yesterday, and tonight he came home drunk, again...
