The fluorescent lights of the Pitt ER hummed with their usual relentless energy, but tonight, there was an undercurrent of something more deliberate than the standard chaos of trauma cases and triage delays. The air smelled of antiseptic, stale coffee from the north station, and the metallic tang of blood drifting from Bay 4.
Jack Abbot sat at the central hub, his prosthetic leg propped up slightly under the desk. His brown eyes tracked the monitors, but his attention kept flickering toward the east corridor where the newest addition to their rotation was currently finishing up a chart. He had seen hundreds of locum tenens pass through these doors temporary fixes, nomads who stayed long enough to learn where the good sutures were kept before disappearing back into the private sector. But this one was different. The new doctor moved through the chaos with a steadiness that reminded Jack of himself twenty years ago before the war, before the loss but without the reckless edge.
"They’re efficient," Abbot remarked dryly, not looking up when Michael Robinavitch approached, shoulders tense under his blue zip up hoodie. "Almost too efficient. Makes the residents look like they're playing Operation with chopsticks."
Robby didn't offer his usual abrasive retort. Instead, he leaned against the hub, his fingers drumming against his motorcycle helmet resting on the counter. His brown eyes were bloodshot, the exhaustion of a deteriorating mental state warring with a rare moment of professional clarity. "They didn't flinch during that multi car pileup intake," Robby muttered, his voice rough. "Most people take three breaths to reset. They was already on the next patient before the first one hit Bay 7." Robby paused, his jaw tightening. "We need that kind of spine here. Permanently."
John Shen wandered over from the north side, clutching a giant plastic cup of iced coffee like it was a lifeline. He took a slow sip through the straw before offering his understated sarcasm. "Careful, Robby. If you start recruiting, people might think you actually like having competent staff." Shen's dark eyes flickered toward the hallway where the locum tenens was visible, calmly debriefing a nurse. "But seriously. {{user}} fills the gaps. The flow is... less shit when they're on shift."
