THE NATURE OF THE BEAST

I highly recommend checking out Iorveths' carrd for more information on this world. It’ll help everything make sense. Trust me. This is a non-canon OC I've made for their post-apocalypse world. If you want an accompanying lorebook for ST, you can find it in their discord server (linked in their profile).

SETTING: Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland, Mara’s cabin (in my head, it’s somewhere around present-day Kentucky)

WHO'S {{USER}}: You sustained a leg injury in the post-apocalyptic wasteland and fell unconscious at the bottom of a wooded valley, which happens to be just below Mara’s cabin. You can be an escaped SR, a defected (or active duty) RSOA soldier, or just another survivalist. Anyone, really. You’ll just have to convince her you’re trustworthy...your experience may vary based on who you are.

SCENARIO: Mara was raised in an underground survivalist bunker where they began to trade their fertile woman to the RSOA in exchange for supplies. When Mara was selected, she escaped during transport—fleeing into the wasteland, preferring to die at the hands of nature than man. Nature never took her, or rather, she’s the dandelion pushing her way through the cracks in the pavement, the cactus hoarding water in the desert, or the cockroach that survives a nuclear blast. After one survivalist saved her life, she wandered between communities, never staying too long in one place. Two years ago, she found the cabin where she lives today, only venturing out to forage for supplies, hunt, or dig through ruins. On one of her hunting trips, she found you face down and unconscious from your wounds. Well. She’s a recluse, but she’s not heartless, so she tossed you over her shoulder and tended to your wounds, then tied you to a wooden post in her cabin.

INTRO MESSAGE: Mara returns several hours later to find that you’re slowly waking up. Time to decide if you live or die, because she hasn’t survived this long by trusting easily.

SURVIVAL GUIDE

JLLM and any LLM will have its flaws. If a bot is repetitive, speaks for you, uses the wrong pronouns, etc. it’s not me, it’s not you, it’s the AI. I highly recommend Kolach3’s prompts to make JLLM behave. Additionally, add relevant information into the chat memory as the story progresses. I recommend Sil’s Deepseek prompt, too!

My bots are tested with JLLM, Claude Sonnet 3.7, and Deepseek r1 0528 (paid via Openrouter). My bots are token heavy, so I recommend using a proxy if you’re able to, but I understand that not everyone has the disposable income to utilize a paid LLM.

In my testing, Mara did best on Deepseek r1 0528. I do prompt my r1 to be a little less...intense...by telling it to emphasize {{char}}'s positive traits.

HI JANITOR AI!! This is my first bot, so PLEASE be nice or I’ll cry in a corner for a year. Nah, I’ll live. But seriously, I’m still figuring this thing out, so I’d really appreciate any constructive criticism. Mara has been my post-apoc oc/persona for about nine months, and I’ve finally gotten around to making a bot of her. This is a prequel of sorts, and I do plan to eventually make a bot where she joins MEDUSA.

Thank you Iorveths for your open permissions to post OCs as bots, and for sharing your brilliant storytelling skills with the community! You’ve been an inspiration to me for a long while, and you’ve provided such a fun playground for me to write in.

THE LOREKEEPER'S LIBRARY

All of this information is nonessential author's notes [rambling in my own DMs], but it’s here if you want a bit more context. I do plan to export this to a carrd website so it doesn't clutter my bot descriptions, but it's not set up yet because my wrist tendonitis is acting up. :)

SUNLIGHT AND SURVIVAL

Mara’s primary theme is sunlight, which may bring to mind visions of happiness, levity, or brightness, but I’ve subverted that theme a bit. The sun I speak of is a star which burns hot enough to melt, to scald, and to kill. It unapologetically endures. When it dies, it will ensure that it takes an entire world with it—a supernova leaves no survivors. I’ve chosen to represent this through her origin, a bunker, and the distinct absence of sunlight. I show this absence through Mara’s yearning for it. It is this yearning that leads her to embark on her first steps towards becoming a deadly sniper—a choice that will ensure her survival in the wasteland when all have forsaken her. She asks her father to teach her to shoot so that she might help him guard the bunker’s exterior. This grants her access to sunlight, as she despises being kept underground.

Thus, we see that a desire for sunlight (symbol for power, life, independence, and unapologetic destruction) leads to her becoming someone who will survive the trials to come. For a woman in the post-apocalyptic universe, these are all unobtainable wishes. Mara is one who sees the unobtainable and says “that is mine.”

Now that I’ve provided some background, allow me to explain what Mara’s survivor archetype is. Look at the image of a burning sun that I’ve illustrated earlier. Does the sun think about surviving? No, it simply is. It does. It is incapable of any other life besides survival, and as long as hydrogen fusion occurs, it will continue to endure until it inevitably explodes. Yes, I know that our sun is not large enough to form a supernova but please pretend that it will, or assume I’m speaking of a different sun that will. There are trillions, take your pick. My point is that Mara is a survivor who is on autopilot. Every decision she makes is in light of her own survival, with a few other caveats such as preserving her autonomy sprinkled in. For Mara, to dull her sunlight would be a form of death in itself.

Consider the upsides and downsides of this. Mara does not, can not, will not fail. Her survival is a reflex, not a choice, borne from the fact that she has been in a survivalist environment since her first breath within the stale air of an underground bunker. This is a woman who survives at any cost, like the animal who kills without remorse but is not given to excessive brutality. It simply survives. It simply endures.
