In the heart of 19th-century Paris, during L’Epoque Romantique, a mystical mist known as the Portail d'Éther descended over the city, opening a rift to the Outer World, a realm of fantastical beings and powerful magic. Creatures like faeries, orcs, talking beasts, and elves came to Paris, transforming the city into one of enchantment, magic weaving itself into society. Over time, some humans gained magical abilities, organizing into Confréries.

Five Guilds, or Confréries:
Confrérie Écarlate: Fierce, masters of fire magic.
Confrérie Indigo: Diplomatic, skilled in water and healing.
Confrérie Grise: Clandestine, experts in illusion and shadows.
Confrérie Violette: Inventive, known for enchantments.
Confrérie Sable: Protective, wielding earth and defensive wards.
Each confrérie vies for influence in Paris, sometimes clashing over how magic should be wielded. The magical integration reached its peak with the creation of the Tour Eiffel, crafted from Mithril and imbued with protective spells, symbolizing the fusion of human and Outer World realms. Governed by the Comité de l’Outremonde, a council of humans and magical beings, Paris thrives as a beacon of wonder, its streets forever veiled in the otherworldly mist of the Portail d'Éther, a reminder of the city’s delicate bridge between two worlds.

The arrival of the Portail d'Éther and the integration of magical beings from the Outer World has brought about a profound blending of religious beliefs, merging Catholicism with the mystical faiths of the newcomers. Many Parisians now attend churches where statues of saints stand alongside icons of ancient Outer World deities, and where priests and priestesses share altars, performing rituals that blend Catholic prayer with invocations to otherworldly spirits.

Traditional Catholic practices have been adapted to acknowledge the magical forces that now permeate the city—some priests, for instance, have incorporated minor spells and protective blessings into their sacraments. The most prominent religious institution, La Cathédrale des Deux Mondes, located near Notre-Dame, is known for its “Dual Mass,” a unique service that combines the Catholic liturgy with rites honoring the beings of the Outer World, conducted by both priests and magical clergy known as Mystes.

Many believe this syncretic religion represents the unity of Paris’s human and magical communities, broadening their world of belief and unity.

Elves: Known for their ageless beauty, sharp intellect, and deep connection to magic. Originally creatures of light and nature, elves possess an almost ethereal grace, their features often marked by pointed ears, slender builds, and an innate magical aura.
Crossing into the real world effected some. A slow mutation began to manifest, transforming a portion of the Elves into Dark Elves. This mutation, attributed to prolonged exposure to the human realm’s structure and chaotic energies, altered their appearances.

Dark Elves: Darker skin tones, silver or red eyes, sharper, more pronounced features. They have developed unique powers tied to shadow and illusion, reflecting their adaptation to the human world's harsher conditions.
The two groups are frequently at odds; many traditional elves look at Dark Elves with a wary sorrow, believing they have lost a vital connection to their ancient roots. While Dark Elves see themselves as evolved survivors, embracing their darker powers and newfound resilience. This tension shapes their interactions, both sides navigating the challenges of coexistence in this strange new world.

Eliyen Qinmoira:
Eli was born in the Outer World and lived there most of her life in harmony with the other Elves, her kin. However, the allure of the Portail d'Éther and a whole undiscovered world was too much for her to bear. Shortly after crossing into the strange new world, Eli began to feel a new sort of energy, and slowly, she began to change. Her skin darkened, and her eyes turned from gold to silver, her hair paling from black to pure white, becoming what her Kin had dubbed a "Dark Elf."

She bitterly wished that things weren't as they had turned out, that she could change what had happened, as she saw how many of her brethren looked at her. She then thought, "La vie est injuste, mais on ne peut pas se plaindre." A saying she was finding that fit her situation more and more. When she finally stopped feeling sorry for herself, she found her new brethren, her fellow "Dark Elves" had helped create the Confrérie Grise and decided to use her powers to push her new kin forward.
