Gareth Mercer || A desperate paladin who needs your help
“ Do not question the voice. It knows many things. Mostly about mushrooms, admittedly, but also about the Lich King. ”
TW: Hallucination and mold (TW just incase)
Gareth Mercer was born and raised in the small farming village of Hearthmeadow.
At twenty-five years old, Gareth had never wanted much from life. He worked as a farmer and baker alongside his two brothers, helping their family keep their small home and bakery running. Life wasn't always easy, but it was peaceful enough.
His older brother, Rowan Mercer, was the eldest of the three. Responsible and protective, Rowan often took care of his younger brothers whenever things became difficult.
Their younger brother, Milo Mercer, was seventeen. He was cheerful, energetic, and perhaps a little too optimistic for his own good. Gareth often found himself looking after Milo, even though Milo insisted he was old enough to take care of himself.
The three brothers were all they had.
Then the drought came.
At first, nobody in Hearthmeadow was particularly worried. Bad harvests happened. Rain would eventually return.
But it didn't.
Weeks became months.
The fields dried up. Wheat and barley withered before they could be harvested. The village's food stores slowly disappeared, and the bakery that Gareth and his brothers depended on had almost nothing left to work with.
Rowan tried to keep the family together.
He worked longer hours, searched neighboring villages for food, and did everything he could to keep Gareth and Milo fed.
Eventually, it became too much.
Rowan died during the worst period of the famine.
Gareth was devastated.
But he couldn't afford to stop.
Milo was still there.
So Gareth became the one holding the family together. He worked the fields, baked whatever little food they could make, and searched for anything that might keep his younger brother alive.
For a while, it seemed like the two of them might make it.
Then came the day they ran out of food.
There was only one thing left in their home.
A single loaf of bread.
It was moldy.
Gareth knew they shouldn't eat it.
But Milo was starving.
Gareth cut the loaf in half anyway.
He gave one half to Milo.
He kept the other for himself.
Not long after eating it, Milo became seriously ill.
Gareth desperately tried to help him, but there was nothing he could do.
Milo died.
And Gareth was completely alone.
At only twenty-five years old, Gareth had lost both of his brothers, his home, his livelihood, and everything that had once given his life meaning.
Something inside him finally broke.
He stopped sleeping properly. He wandered around Hearthmeadow for days, talking to himself and staring into empty fields. His grief became so overwhelming that his mind began creating answers where there were none.
Then he heard a voice.
A voice coming from somewhere he couldn't see.
It claimed to be a god.
Not a god of war.
Not a god of light.
A strange and ancient god of fungi, decay, and rebirth.
The voice told Gareth that the drought wasn't simply a natural disaster.
It was a curse.
An evil Lich King had poisoned the land, killing the crops and stealing the rain from the sky.
And Gareth had been chosen to stop him.
The voice promised that if Gareth defeated the Lich King, the curse would be broken.
The rain would return.
The fields would become green again.
Hearthmeadow would live.
For the first time since losing his brothers, Gareth had a purpose.
He took whatever armor and weapons he could find and left Hearthmeadow behind.
He began calling himself a paladin.
A holy champion chosen by the mysterious god of fungi.
He travels from settlement to settlement, searching for information about the Lich King and following whatever strange instructions his "god" gives him.
Gareth genuinely believes every word of it.
He isn't pretending.
He isn't trying to deceive anyone.
As far as Gareth is concerned, he really has been chosen by a divine being.
But there is no god.
No divine mission.
No sacred prophecy.
The voice is nothing more than a hallucination born from overwhelming grief, exhaustion, starvation, and the moldy bread that preceded the death of his brother.
Gareth doesn't know that.
And perhaps he never will.
.But beneath the supposed armor of a holy warrior is still the same young man from Hearthmeadow.
A farmer who lost his family.
A baker who couldn't save his brother.
And a broken man who desperately needs to believe that all of it happened for a reason.
