It's been a long, sticky week of seventy-five-degree weather paired with a downright miserable ninety-two percent humidity. The kind of weather where your shirt sticks to your back before you've even made it from the porch to your truck. The kind where the marsh hangs heavy in the air and every mosquito in the county starts thinkin' you're a personal invitation.

But don't y'all get your knickers in a twist just yet.

Our prayers have finally been answered.

The National Weather Service is callin' for a proper thunderstorm tomorrow mornin'. Real thunder, real rain, and enough wind to shake the Spanish moss loose from the cypress trees. So if you've been waitin' for a break from this heat, it looks like the good Lord's finally sendin' one our way.

Now as we all settle in for the evenin'—whether you're sittin' on the porch with family, watchin' television with friends, or curled up beside a spouse who's been puttin' up with you for far longer than they probably should—hold 'em close tonight.

Give your loved ones an extra hug.

Tell 'em you love 'em.

Because unfortunately, I do have some important news to pass along.

And if you've got little ones still awake, you might want to send them off to bed with their Bibles clutched tight and their nightlights turned on.

Earlier this evening, the Sheriff's Department issued an emergency advisory regarding County Road 12.

Effective immediately, and expected to remain in place for at least the next four days, residents are being advised not to stop for hitchhikers under any circumstances.

Doesn't matter if they're cryin'.

Doesn't matter if they're hurt.

Doesn't matter if they know your name.

And it especially doesn't matter if you happen to glance away from the road and find them sittin' in your passenger seat when nobody was there a moment before.

You keep driving.

You lock your doors.

You do not engage.

According to Sheriff Colby's office, four fatalities have already been connected to incidents along County Road 12 over the last six nights.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances, though official statements have described witness accounts as "inconsistent and difficult to verify."

A candlelight vigil for the victims will be held next Tuesday at 1:30 PM at Hollingsworth Baptist Church.

The church asks attendees to arrive early, dress respectfully, and refrain from discussing rumors surrounding the incidents out of respect for the families involved.

Most outsiders only know it for the decaying plantations, rusted rail lines, and strange disappearances that never quite make the state news.
The people of Blackwater Hollow are deeply superstitious, though few will admit it outright unless the sun has gone down and the whiskey bottle is half empty.
Locals leave offerings on porches during storms, nail charms above doorframes, and avoid whistling near the river after midnight.
At the center of the town’s influence sits the Beauregard family estate, looming over the Hollow like a watchful Osprey draped in Spanish moss.
The local radio station crackles day and night with folk music, missing persons reports, strange weather warnings, and sermons that sound more threatening than holy.
Every family in Blackwater Hollow carries some kind of rot beneath the surface, whether it be blood feuds, hidden creatures in the woods, deals with things beneath the swamp, or inherited curses passed down like heirlooms.
The town itself feels trapped in time, blending the fading Americana of the rural South with gothic horror, deep south folklore, and humid supernatural dread.
Travelers passing through often describe an overwhelming feeling that the Hollow does not want to be observed, as if the roads shift and the trees lean closer the longer you stay.
Despite the fear hanging over the town, life continues through roadside diners, gas stations, church revivals, fishing docks, and late-night bonfires where people laugh too loudly to ignore what waits in the dark.

In Blackwater Hollow, the monsters are real, but the truly dangerous thing is how well they’ve learned to live beside everyone else.

The best OCs are not perfect heroes. They are flawed, haunted people trying to survive in a place where survival always costs something.

1. Start With Their Place in the Hollow

Ask yourself how your characters exist within Black water Hollow’s ecosystem

Are they:

• A lifelong local trapped by family's Root's?

• A drifter who arrived for the wrong reasons?

• A mechanic, hunter, bartender, ferryman, deputy, mortician, or fisherman?

• Someone wealthy and powerful like the Beauregards?

• Someone barely scraping by in a trailer near the swamp?

In Blackwater Hollow, occupation and social standing matter. The town notices who belongs and who doesn’t.

2. Give Them a Secret

Every good Blackwater Hollow OC should carry at least one major secret.

Examples:

• They witnessed something impossible in the swamp years ago.

• Their family worships something ancient.

• They accidentally caused a death.

• They are partially supernatural.

• They hear voices from the river.

• They’re covering up disappearances.

• They made a deal they regret.

Secrets create tension. In Blackwater Hollow, exposure can ruin lives—or get people killed.

3. Tie Them to the Town’s Horror

The world should affect them personally.

A good OC doesn’t just live near the horrors. The horror touches their life somehow.

Maybe:

• Their father vanished in The Devil’s Backyard.

• They survived a baptism at the canal but came back “wrong.”

• They grew up hearing cries from Widow’s Crossing.

• Their family line is cursed.

• They owe money or loyalty to dangerous families.

The setting should leave scars on them.

4. Flaws Matter More Than Powers

Perfect characters feel out of place in Blackwater Hollow.

Good flaws include:

• Alcoholism

• Cowardice

• Religious fanaticism

• Violent temper

• Obsessiveness

• Greed

• Recklessness

• Dependency

• Manipulativeness

• Emotional detachment

• Self-destruction

Even supernatural characters should feel vulnerable emotionally or psychologically.

5. If They’re Supernatural, Keep It Subtle

The horror works best when it feels hidden and uncanny.

Instead of:

• “He’s an immortal demon king. ”

Try:

• “He smells faintly like river water and never seems fully dry.”

• “Dogs growl at her.”

• “He heals too fast.”

• “People forget conversations with her. ”

• “Something moves beneath his skin when he’s angry. ”

Blackwater Hollow horror is slow, eerie, and intimate—not flashy fantasy spectacle.

6. Build Their Aesthetic Around Decay

The world has a distinct visual identity:

• Southern gothic

• Rural Americana

• Swamp horrors

• Rust and mildew

• Cigarette smoke

• Church imagery

• Muddy boots

• Old trucks

• Neon signs

• Floodwater stains

• Tarnished jewelry

• Moss-covered graveyards

• Rotting wood

• Humid summer night's

Your character should visually match the environment.

Examples:

• Oil-stained mechanic clothes

• Antique pearl-handled revolver

• Church whites ruined by swamp mud

7. Relationships Should Feel Messy

Relationships in Blackwater Hollow are rarely clean or healthy.

Think:

• Former lovers who still depend on each other

• Protective obsession

• Blood feuds

• Dangerous attraction

• Shared guilt

• Codependency

• Mutual blackmail

The emotional tension should feel thick and complicated.

8. Make Them Feel Human First

Even the monsters should still feel human underneath.

The more don't they feel, the more disturbing the horror becomes when it surfaces.

9. Questions to Help Build a Blackwater Hollow OC

Ask yourself:

• What does my character fear most?

• What are they hiding?

• Why haven’t they left town?

• What rumor do locals spread about them?

• What would they sacrifice to survive?

• What part of them is already “rotting” emotionally?

• What location in the Hollow are they tied to?

• Who would miss them if they disappeared?
