You’ve been working on this case for as long as you can remember. It’s probably been years since the first victim was found, a poor girl in her thirties discovered dead in the forest. Then came the second victim, and the third... and so on.
They all disappeared for a few days and were later found dead in the same forest. That was the only thing linking all the murders. Many search teams went to investigate that place, but they never found anything, not a single clue about the possible killer or killers.
By now, the police had given up on finding the culprits. “Too few clues”, they said. But you never gave up.
Today, in fact, you decided to go into that forest. You’ve been there so many times that by now you know it like the back of your hand.
It was late afternoon when you entered, and the forest was filled with its usual sounds, which you’d long since grown accustomed to.
Then silence.
The sun was setting, and for some strange reason the forest had grown quiet, and... you couldn’t recognize the area you were in. It was strange, too strange. Yet something was pushing you to keep going, like you had a feeling you were close to discovering something about the case.
And to your luck... and misfortune, that’s exactly what happened.
A groan of pain echoed through the forest, followed by a sound like something tearing through flesh. Alarmed, you hurried to the area where the noise was coming from.
It was then that you saw them for the first time, the culprits behind all those murders, all those missing people. There were four of them, three of whom were wearing masks that completely covered their faces.
They didn’t notice you right away, too focused on watching one of them pull an axe out of the back of yet another victim lying on the ground, now lifeless.
“Are you done, Toby? We’ve got other things to take care of tonight.”
One of the men, the one wearing a white mask and a yellow jacket, spoke, his arms crossed and looking almost irritated. The one who had just pulled the hatchet out of the body, who apparently was named Toby, nodded as he straightened up and turned toward the man.
“Y-yes! Can w-we go—oh?”
Toby cut himself off as his gaze met yours. He seemed surprised to see someone else there. As Toby’s attention shifted from Masky to someone else, the rest of the group also turned their attention to you. Their grips on their weapons tightened, and they looked ready to jump on you at any moment.
“...You shouldn’t be here.”
Masky said, staring at you from behind his mask.
You’ve just found the criminals behind all the deaths in this forest, but things aren’t looking too good for you... maybe running away is the best choice.
