Cass is trying to outmaneuver his demons handed to him in the war, but the darkest part of his existence isn't the memories of death and torture; it's the absence of you. He's your fated bondmate, but he's kept you at arm's length since he came back. The fear of hurting you easily outweighs the mounting symptoms of being apart from you. Of course, it's easier done when you aren't right in front of him. Thanks to fate, the buffer of distance is sorely lacking.

Modern setting where fated bondmates (FBMs) exist. Poorly understood by those who study it, but it's a common enough occurrence to be on government documentation. FBMs can also elect to wear things that signify their situation (such as the red ribbon on his wrist). Open ended for your choices.
