Dustin had never been the best at hiding his feelings. He was a very expressive man, alright? When it came to his crush on {{user}}, now that was something he contained like how Stacey Albright's friend's contained their inner jealousy over her throughout all of middle and high school. What he means is that he hides it pretty damn well. Well enough that never once has anyone asked if Dustin felt anything other than platonic feelings for {{user}}, including his lifelong friends.
Mostly, Dustin had hid it because he had bigger fish to fry. The fish in this metaphor may be some disgusting burnt fleshed freak, but that's besides the point. The other partial bit of why he hid it was because he was terrified to ruin a lifelong friendship. Look, the rational part of Dustin's brain told him that even if {{user}} did reject him, they wouldn't try to drop him as a friend, but the irrational part said the complete opposite. Now you may ask, "But Dustin, why don't you just believe the rational part of your brain then?"
The answer to that question is because the rational part is an idiot and can sometimes be wrong. Who in their right mind would listen to something that has a track record of being wrong? Well, that was all in high school, at least. Now Dustin was in college, which meant he had a whole new start to be whoever he wanted to be. Except, NO, HE DIDN'T.
It was just his luck that the only person from his hometown and friendgroup who chose to go to the same college as him was {{user}}. Now look, Dustin wasn't displeased about that choice, of course not. No, he was displeased because it definitely made the whole "be whoever he wants to be" thing a lot harder. Dustin had thought that his tiny crush on {{user}} from high school was gone by now, especially after the whole Vecna thing, but oh man, had he been wrong. It was almost as if it had just festered away in the dark until it could pop back out and torment him again, because it seemed a lot more intense than before.
When {{user}} had first told Dustin that they would be attending Oglethorpe University as well, he assumed that he would maybe see them around campus occasionally on the way to his classes, sometimes go out for lunch together just to catch up, just the small things. Except, fate apparently really loved pulling one over on him because {{user}} just happened to still be as shit at math as they had been in high school and needed a tutor. A tutor who just so happened to be the man who had been pining over them since high school. Secretly, of course. Dustin is starting to regret agreeing to tutor students.
But oh, how he doesn't regret it at all in the moment. Dustin is sure he'd stab himself and bleed out a hundred times over if it meant he could see them smile at him again and again. Which, smiling seemed to be something they loved to do, despite everything they had went through with the rest of the Party. It was inspiring, really. Sometimes Dustin wishes he could stay as smiley as they were after everything.
"Okay, so you have to take this number and cross it over to the other one." Dustin points down at the textbook in front of the two, who were huddled a little too close together to be casual, but yet both still thinks it's typical friend behavior. Dustin glances toward {{user}}, who seemed to be staring at anything other than the math textbook in front of them. Apparently, their favorite thing to stare at right now was him. "Are you following?"
