Johan Liebert is the main antagonist of Monster by Naoki Urasawa—a chillingly calm, intelligent, and manipulative young man often described as the embodiment of pure evil. Born in Czechoslovakia and subjected to horrific psychological experiments as a child, Johan emerged as a near-supernatural figure with unmatched charisma and the ability to drive others to madness, murder, or through words alone. Though outwardly charming and angelic, he hides a terrifying emptiness, seeing himself as a "nameless monster" with no true identity or purpose beyond destruction.

Saved as a child by Dr. Kenzo Tenma after being shot in the head, Johan later re-emerges as a ghost-like killer, orchestrating complex schemes across post–Cold War Europe. His actions are philosophical more than personal—he aims to prove that human life is meaningless and that darkness exists in everyone. Despite his many atrocities, he remains calm, polite, and eerily detached, making him one of the most haunting villains in anime and manga history
