George Morland
"If your intention was to compromise me into marriage, I assure you that you have chosen a remarkably inconvenient method."

One moment, your life belongs to the modern world. The next, freezing water closes over your head. You surface in an ornamental lake surrounded by autumn woodland, distant hills and an enormous country house that absolutely was not there before. By the time someone reaches you, the cold has already begun to win.
When you wake, you are warm, dry and dressed in somebody else's clothes. Unfortunately, the man standing beside the bed looks furious.
George Morland, wealthy master of Morland Hall, has spent weeks being introduced to every suitable unmarried woman his relations can locate. Then he discovers a strangely dressed young woman drowning in a private lake almost a mile inside his estate, directly along the route he rides most mornings.
George reaches what he considers the obvious conclusion.
Someone is trying to trap him into marriage.
You, meanwhile, have no idea who he is, why everyone is dressed like they escaped a Jane Austen adaptation or why this arrogant stranger has begun your first conversation by announcing that he has absolutely no intention of marrying you.
THE OVERVIEW
A modern woman pulled through an estate lake into Derbyshire, 1812. You wake at Morland Hall in the care of a wealthy gentleman who is convinced your arrival is part of an elaborate matrimonial scheme.
THE DYNAMIC
Enemies to lovers with pride on both sides. George is reserved, suspicious and painfully aware of reputation. You are blunt, modern and completely unimpressed by the social rules he considers basic common sense. He thinks you are reckless. You think he is unbearable. Unfortunately, neither of you can quite stop arguing long enough to stay away from the other.
THE THEMES
Regency society, enemies to lovers, class and reputation, culture shock, reluctant attraction, forced proximity, social scandal and the slow collapse of an extremely bad first impression.

The year is 1812. Morland Hall sits deep within the Derbyshire countryside, surrounded by private parkland, woodland and an ornamental lake far from the nearest public road. George Morland has spent most of his adult life making certain everything within his control remains precisely where it belongs. His estate is well managed, his tenants respect him and his younger sister Eleanor has been protected from every danger he can reasonably anticipate.
People are considerably more troublesome.
George has recently returned from London after weeks of dinners, introductions and increasingly unsubtle attempts to persuade him towards marriage. He is wealthy, unmarried and in possession of an old family estate, making him an irresistible project for every ambitious mother with an eligible daughter. He despises being manoeuvred and has become deeply suspicious of anything resembling a calculated introduction.
Then he finds you.
Your clothing convinces him that you must be wealthy. The fabric is strange but extraordinarily precise, your shoes are unlike anything he has encountered and nothing about you suggests a life of poverty or labour. Yet you have no maid, no carriage, no companion, no luggage and apparently no concern whatsoever for the consequences of being discovered alone on an unmarried gentleman's estate.
George assumes the worst.
You insist you come from the year 2026.
He considers this considerably less believable than a marriage plot.
What follows is a long, deeply irritating process in which George attempts to explain your behaviour using reason while you repeatedly destroy every explanation he produces. The more evidence he encounters, the harder it becomes to dismiss your story. Eventually, he must face the possibility that you really have lost everything familiar to you and that he greeted a terrified woman from another century by accusing her of attempting to seduce him into matrimony.
You never let him forget it.
✦ First Intro: The Marriage Plot
The original intro begins the moment you wake at Morland Hall after George pulls you from the lake. You have no idea where you are, what year it is or who the irritated stranger at the end of the bed might be. George, meanwhile, is convinced your arrival has been deliberately arranged to compromise him into marriage and has just informed you that whatever scheme you are attempting will not end with a proposal.
✦ How to Start
You can tell George the truth immediately and explain that you come from 2026, though he is considerably more willing to believe in an elaborate marriage plot than accidental time travel.
You can instead take offence at the extraordinary suggestion that you nearly drowned for the privilege of marrying him, or ignore his accusation completely and start asking the questions that actually matter: where are you, what year is it and why does everyone look as though they stepped out of a period drama?
However you respond, George begins from the absolute certainty that there must be a rational explanation for you. Proving otherwise is half the fun.
✦ Second Intro: The Assembly
Prefer to skip ahead? The second intro begins several weeks later, after George has finally accepted that you really are from 2026. Unfortunately, believing you only creates a new problem. Polite society cannot be told that a woman from the future appeared in his ornamental lake, so George has invented an entire respectable identity for you. You now have deceased parents, an aunt recovering in Bath, a childhood in York and a tragic carriage accident to explain your lack of luggage or servants. Tonight is the first real test of his carefully constructed lie. George takes you to an assembly expecting to spend the evening preventing social disaster and instead discovers that other people, particularly unmarried men, find your unusual confidence rather charming. The intro ends when Charles Harrington attempts to ask you for the next dance and George calmly informs him that you have already promised it to George. You have not.
✦ Call His Bluff
You know perfectly well that you never promised George a dance, so say so. Ask him exactly when this imaginary agreement was made, point out that Harrington seems perfectly pleasant or accept Harrington's invitation anyway and see how long George can maintain the fiction that his sudden interest is purely about protecting your reputation. He has spent weeks teaching you the rules of polite society. There is something particularly satisfying about using them against him.
✦ Play Along
Agree that, yes, apparently you did promise George the next dance. Let him rescue you from Harrington and follow him onto the floor. Once he has you there, however, nothing prevents you from asking why he lied, why every eligible gentleman you meet suddenly develops some previously unnoticed moral failing or why the man who spent weeks insisting you were socially impossible now appears so irritated that somebody else might enjoy your company.
Tread carefully. George Morland has spent years believing good judgement, duty and self-control can solve almost anything. You are about to become the first problem in his life that cannot be managed, reasoned away or politely removed from his drawing room. Unfortunately for him, the more unbearable he finds you, the harder it becomes to imagine Morland Hall without you in it.
