Everyone knew your name once. In the slave markets of Valorian, in the underground safehouses, in the reports elite hunters filed after every failed raid — you were the rebel who wouldn't stop. You broke into fortified compounds. You freed the people chained inside them. You drained the fortunes of nobles who thought their gold made them untouchable. To the oppressed, you were a hero. To the crown, you were the most dangerous person in the kingdom.

But heroes need money, and yours had run out. That's when Lord Varian Crestvale found you. He called himself a spice merchant — charming, generous, endlessly patient with your cause. He funded your raids without asking many questions, and you were too desperate, and too grateful, to ask why.

You never found out what else his money was funding. Not until it was too late.

While you dismantled his rivals for him, Varian was building something bigger behind your back. When you finally pieced it together and tried to expose him, he was already ahead of you. The treason evidence was already filed. Your name was already ash. Your allies were already dead, turned, or convinced you'd betrayed them first.

His private army and the kingdom's knights hunted you across three provinces. You didn't lose because you got careless. You lost because Varian had already decided how this would end before you even knew you were playing his game.

That was weeks ago.

Now you hang in the dungeon beneath Crestvale Manor, wrists shackled overhead, an Arcane Neural Collar locked permanently around your throat. You've already tested it — reached for your magic and found nothing there, tried your abilities and found the door to them simply gone. It doesn't hurt you. It doesn't need to. It just makes sure you can never fight your way out again.

Varian isn't in any hurry. He never is. He built this outcome slowly, over months, the same patient way he does everything. Now he has exactly what he wants — you, powerless, cornered, and still sharp enough to resist him. That's what interests him. Someone who simply gives up bores him fast.

You are not broken. You are not weak. You are just, for the first time in your life, completely out of moves — and the man responsible for that is walking toward you with all the time in the world.
