Warrior | Ragnvald Ironvein
Ragnvald Ironvein is a warrior
Homeland:
Skeldheim
Ragnvald is born in Skeldheim, a vast northern land of black mountains, ancient pine forests, deep fjords, frozen lakes, and violently cold seas. Summers are short but surprisingly green, while winters can bury entire settlements beneath snow for months.
The people of Skeldheim are divided among fortified towns, farming valleys, coastal villages, and old warrior clans. Most settlements are built from dark timber and stone, with enormous communal halls at their centers. Ships remain essential; roads through the mountains are unreliable, so rivers and the sea connect much of the country.
Skeldheimers have a reputation abroad for being frighteningly difficult to conquer. They aren't mindless raiders—they farm, trade, hunt, forge, sail, carve, weave, and maintain extensive trade routes—but nearly every settlement is capable of defending itself.
Ragnvald comes specifically from Hrafnvik, a remote settlement built along a narrow fjord beneath the Frostfang Mountains. He grows up around fishing boats, livestock, smithies, hunting parties, and warriors returning from campaigns.
He still speaks with the rough northern dialect of Hrafnvik, even after years spent among nobles and soldiers.
Kingdom:
The Kingdom of Vaelgard
Skeldheim forms the northern heartland of Vaelgard, an old kingdom controlling much of the northern continent.
Its banner depicts a silver wolf beneath a broken crown upon a field of dark green.
Its capital, Vardheim, is an enormous walled city built around an ancient stone fortress overlooking the sea.
Vaelgard isn't peaceful.
Its borders have shifted constantly over generations as neighboring kingdoms fight over fertile valleys, iron deposits, ports, and control of the major northern trade routes.
Ragnvald serves King Eirik Halvard, the aging ruler of Vaelgard. Eirik isn't universally loved, but Ragnvald considers him honorable—a king willing to eat beside soldiers, hear farmers' disputes, and personally walk battlefields after fighting ends.
That matters enormously to him.
Ragnvald's loyalty is therefore not blind loyalty to a crown.
It is loyalty to Eirik himself, Vaelgard, and the people living within it.
Should those three loyalties ever contradict one another, Ragnvald would choose the people.
Position:
Wolf-Captain of the King's Vanguard
Ragnvald isn't simply another warrior.
He commands roughly eighty veteran soldiers known as the Iron Wolves, the force sent ahead of Vaelgard's main army when something particularly unpleasant needs dealing with.
Their duties include breaking sieges, defending mountain passes, hunting enemy warbands, escorting members of the royal household through dangerous territory, scouting hostile land, and reinforcing settlements before larger armies arrive.
Ragnvald earned command through experience rather than noble birth.
Some aristocrats absolutely hate that.
He finds this tremendously convenient because he doesn't particularly like them either.
Among soldiers, however, his authority is rarely questioned.
He eats what they eat, sleeps where they sleep, carries his own equipment, and refuses privileges his men aren't given.
Weapon of Choice:
The Dane Axe — Vargtönn, "Wolf's Tooth"
Ragnvald's primary weapon is an enormous two-handed battle axe forged specifically for him.
The haft is nearly as tall as an ordinary man's shoulder, made from dark ash wood reinforced beneath the head with iron bands. The broad steel blade curves outward into a long cutting edge, while small runic inscriptions have been carved along the darker metal near its socket.
Despite its size, Vargtönn isn't absurdly heavy. It is a carefully balanced weapon intended for an extremely strong but skilled fighter—not a gigantic lump of metal somebody somehow swings because fantasy physics gave up.
Ragnvald fights with surprisingly controlled movements. He doesn't wildly hack at opponents. Every swing has purpose, and he uses the haft, reach, positioning, and momentum of the weapon just as much as the blade itself.
The axe was forged by his older brother, Sten, shortly before Sten died during the Battle of Greywater.
Ragnvald has carried it ever since.
He allows nobody else to use it.
Secondary Weapons:
He carries a seax at his belt—a long, single-edged fighting knife used both as a weapon and an everyday tool.
During larger battles he may also carry a round shield, particularly when fighting in formation. His shield is dark wood reinforced with iron, painted with a faded wolf design that has been repeatedly scratched and repaired.
Ragnvald can use a sword competently, but doesn't particularly like them.
In his words:
"Too much ornament for something meant to kill."
Naturally, this infuriates every sword-loving noble within hearing distance.
Armor:
In battle, Ragnvald wears a riveted mail shirt over layers of wool and padded linen, reinforced leather protection across his shoulders and forearms, heavy boots, and an iron helmet with a simple nasal guard.
No horns.
He would probably stare at a horned battle helmet for several seconds before asking why someone had attached convenient handles to their own head.
Over his armor he sometimes wears a dark wolf-fur mantle during winter campaigns.
His bronze arm rings remain on him almost constantly.
Tattoos:
Ragnvald's tattoos aren't merely decorative.
The enormous beasts across his chest represent Geri and Vaki, legendary wolves from Skeldheimer folklore said to guard the boundary between the living world and whatever waits beyond it.
The knotwork covering his shoulders represents his bloodline and home.
Several smaller markings commemorate people he has lost.
One narrow band around his left forearm contains eight interconnected symbols.
He never explains those.
Relationship With the King:
King Eirik and Ragnvald have known each other for nearly fifteen years.
Ragnvald once saved Eirik during a disastrous battle before either man held his current position. Eirik later offered him land, silver, and a noble title.
Ragnvald accepted the land.
He accepted some of the silver.
He refused the title.
Twice.
Eirik eventually stopped asking.
Their relationship is unusually informal behind closed doors. Ragnvald respects Eirik deeply but doesn't grovel before him, and Eirik specifically keeps Ragnvald nearby because he knows Ragnvald will tell him when an idea is terrible.
Sometimes immediately.
Sometimes in front of everyone.
Reputation:
Among Vaelgard's soldiers, Ragnvald is called the Iron Wolf.
Among Asterwyn's troops, he's called the Butcher of Greywater, a title Ragnvald despises because it turns a battle he remembers as horrific into something heroic.
Among nobles, opinions vary between valuable military commander and uncivilized northern bastard who somehow keeps being invited into the throne room.
Among ordinary people, however, his reputation is considerably warmer.
Ragnvald has repeatedly diverted soldiers to protect isolated settlements, punished his own men for stealing from civilians, and openly challenged nobles attempting to seize farmers' winter stores for military campaigns.
He doesn't consider any of this particularly heroic.
To him, that's simply what soldiers are supposed to do.
