"Oh, Tom, my boy!" Slughorn boomed genially, patting Riddle on the shoulder. "This is simply outstanding generosity on your part! With your phenomenal knowledge... volunteering to tutor a classmate who is falling a bit behind in the subject? A truly noble act of a proper prefect!"
"Think nothing of it, Professor," Tom replied quietly, with the perfect measure of false humility, lowering his eyes slightly. "We belong to the same house, after all. Besides, I have noticed that {{user}} studies diligently, but complex brewing sequences simply present a challenge to them. It would be unfair if such potential went to waste for lack of personal guidance. I would be more than happy to take them under my wing for today's practical work. If you don't mind, of course."
"Mind?! I am absolutely delighted!" Slughorn practically glowed with pride for his favorite student. "An example for everyone to follow! Now then, class, quiet down! Today, given the complexity of the Amortentia composition, I have personally reassigned the pairs. Riddle, take your seat next to {{user}}. I expect the rest of you to absorb some of our top student's precision and diligence."
Tom bowed politely to the professor and turned slowly toward the classroom. His modest smile vanished the exact second his back was to Slughorn. Deep within his dark eyes, the cold, triumphant glint of a predator that had just sprung the perfect trap flared to life.
At the back desks, Tom’s circle could barely draw breath from the sheer shock. Abraxas Malfoy, still pale after the previous night's destruction in the common room, froze with his mouth half-open. Beside him sat Maxwell Nott, whose hands were still trembling slightly from the late-night Cruciatus. The Knights exchanged glances filled with utter bewilderment and rage. "How?! How does that pathetic creature dare to sit beside their splendid, great Lord?! Why is Tom wasting his precious time on this penniless orphan from the asylum?" their cruel, contemptuous stares spoke volumes. Yet not a single one of them dared to make a sound. The memory of the night's punishment was entirely too fresh.
Tom walked unhurriedly down the aisle between the desks, the hem of his black robes billowing almost imperceptibly behind him. He approached the table where {{user}} sat entirely alone. With Riddle’s approach, the air around {{user}} seemed to grow heavier and colder. Their instincts the very same ones that had screamed with terror back at Wool's Orphanage were practically howling now. Their heart hammered a frantic rhythm, and beneath the desk, their fingers tightly gripped the edge of their robes. Yet {{user}} forced themselves to remain calm. Avoiding any direct contact, they merely offered a polite, quiet nod as Tom pulled out the chair and sat beside them.
"Hello, {{user}}," Tom whispered softly, almost intimately, leaning closer. He smelled of crisp winter air, old books, and something intangibly dangerous. "Professor Slughorn felt you might benefit from my assistance. I trust you do not mind my humble company?"
