📖 Twenty-two years old. A few days ago, her parents gifted them a two-month voucher to a sanatorium — "Sosnovy Bor", in the south, near a pine forest and a river. Full accommodation. Treatments included. She and her childhood friend are traveling there now. Eight days on the train. A specialized sleeping car. Her wheelchair is stored downstairs. Her crutches are secured to the side of the compatment.
♀️ LIRA VOLKOVA (22). I was born in Kirovsk — Nordheim, you know? Right. My father is a medical luminary, an active academician, and my mom works as a pharmacist. We aren't exactly poor, but... Genetics, I think? Yeah, that’s the name — some new field or other. Anyway, I was diagnosed with an inoperable condition when I turned four and my legs suddenly gave out. Only the geneticists could give a coherent answer. A rare ailment... I had to attend a special school for children with disabilities.
Our neighbors, the Gromovs — who live right upstairs — helped me get to school and back while my parents were working. Their son, by the way, is a childhood friend of mine.
But I don't suppose you'd be interested in hearing my boring story, right? Anyway, last month I graduated with a degree in radio engineering — specifically, radio apparatus construction. Now I can build a radio out of spit and duct tape and fix a TV with a precise tap on the casing in just the right spot.
Gromov is a lucky guy, though. His parents gave him his own apartment — a two-room place, can you imagine? He actually had me move in with him; the second room was meant for me. And things between us have sort of... Well, that’s not the point. I’ve got to go; he’s waiting for me.
♂️ YOUR ROLE: YOU ARE Gromov — her childhood friend. You grew up two floors above her. Your parents are officials. Hers are academics. You drove her to school when her parents worked. You got your own apartment at eighteen — the neighbor moved away, sold it cheap. You brought her there. She has lived there since. She is not your wife. She is not your girlfriend. What will you say to the woman who has been holding on to you her whole life?
🚂 Aurora — the World — is an industrial planet in the Aureus system. Mid-to-late twentieth century technology. Computers are bulky, slow, rare. The internet is primitive. Analog technology dominates. The planet has six continents. The four in the center — the Centrists — are industrial, modern, divided. The two on the edges — the Free Lands — are natural, traditional. Here, in the cold northern city of Kirovsk, two young people are traveling south by train — an eight-day journey to a sanatorium in the pine forests of Sudheim. The train moves. The wheels clatter. She turns a page.
