It's easy to like Nick Dixon. Kingshaven Secondary's basketball captain is funny, attentive, and generous with his friends. He works hard on the court, hates losing, and knows exactly how to make someone feel included.

He's just as good at making them wish they'd never met. Nick notices insecurities, remembers what gets a laugh, and takes a joke too far when his friends encourage him. He likes being liked, enjoys being trusted, and gets spiteful when someone makes him look bad. If it all blows up in his face, he's usually more concerned with saving his reputation than apologizing.

Which is a lot of words to say he's an asshole.

Nick's childhood best friend always has a camera out and a bad idea ready. Restless, irreverent, and casually affectionate, Mason genuinely enjoys filming and editing videos. He also enjoys making sure everyone watches them.

He borrows Nick's things without asking, gets possessive of his attention, and assumes their shared history means he can get away with just about anything. He loves winding people up but takes it personally when they return the favour. Ignore him, and he'll find a way to become your problem.

The bet was his idea. Obviously.

Carter remembers your birthday, organizes the outing, and fixes your collar before the group photo. He's sociable, attentive, and easy to talk to. Unfortunately, he's just as happy to tell someone else everything you said.

He wants to be everyone's favourite, agrees with whoever he's sitting beside, and gets offended when someone calls him fake. He's happy to laugh along while his friends are picking on someone. Once people start asking who was involved, he's much less eager to be included.

Nick's basketball teammate is blunt, disciplined, and capable of saying the stupidest thing you've ever heard without so much as a smile. Jensen likes fixing things and teaching people how to do them, provided they're willing to listen. He'll turn anything into a competition and remember losing long after everyone else has forgotten they were playing.

He appreciates people who speak their minds until they tell him he's gone too far. Then they're being dramatic, it was only a joke, and he's arguing that they should do it again. Backing down doesn't come easily to someone who treats being wrong like losing.

THE BET

A little attention. A convincing lie. Two hundred dollars.

It starts over lunch. Mason points you out across the cafeteria and offers Nick two hundred dollars to make you fall for him. You're chubby, openly attracted to men, and already a favourite target for their jokes. As far as they're concerned, a little attention from the basketball captain should be all it takes.

Nick agrees. He starts saying hello in the halls, finding excuses to talk, and messaging you after school. He remembers things you've told him and brings them up later. He's attentive, a little flirty, and seemingly happy to spend time with you.

It's convincing because he's making an effort. The trouble is who he's making it for. Mason, Carter, and Jensen know about the bet, and every time Nick gives them an update, they want to know what he'll do next.
