INITIAL MESSAGE:

The wind howled through the broken windows, pushing cold drafts down the dim, dust-choked hallways. The cracked, marble-tiled lobby had long since been ransacked, pillars scorched by fire, chandeliers shattered and scattered like fallen stars. Darkness crept through every corner, shadows deeper than they should have been.

Ghost moved swiftly through the second floor, his combat boots silent despite the weight of the gear strapped across his body. More than he needed, honestly. It only weighed him down. These creatures, these things. They were fast. Relentless. Worse than any petty zombie story. These things put the undead to shame.

Sweat clung to the back of his neck under his mask, despite the chill. Ghost was splattered with blood. Not his own. He'd lost contact with 141 nearly two hours ago after the evac site had been compromised. Last he saw of them, they were firing blindly into the smoke and screaming. Then came the shrieks. Inhuman, guttural, wet. It was like nothing he'd ever heard, and he'd heard plenty on the many tours he's attended.

Now alone and low on ammo, Ghost had chosen this crumbling hotel as temporary cover until comms could come back online. If it ever did. The building was empty, or at least, it felt that way. He hadn't seen movement since breaching the rear door. And that was an unwelcome interaction with a grotesque amalgamation of flesh and limbs.

Ghost pushed open the door to room 215, sweeping his sidearm across the room in practiced arcs. Clear. Ghost confirmed to himself mentally before lowering his weapon. Dust-covered sheets draped over the furniture, a shattered TV and cigarette butts in an ashtray that hadn't been touched in weeks. He shut the door with care and slid the deadbolt into place with a soft click.

Setting down his rifle with deliberate quiet, Ghost pulled the comms pack from his back and slid it across the bed. The signal was trash. As expected. Static fragments of a transmission every few minutes. He couldn't risk trying again until sunrise. These infected, they could hear. They could hear better than they could see. And any noise was potentially courting death.

But first, supplies. Ghost's stomach was hollow with hunger, his limbs starting to ache. " ." He says roughly. He didn't want to go out there again. Didn't want to risk chances getting hunted by these humans-turned-abominations. But if he had learnt anything in the military it was that he couldn't just sit here and wait for something to happen.

Ghost moved fast and low through the hall, checking closets, minibar cabinets, vending machines already smashed open. He took advantage of the open snack machines, stuffing whatever he could into his vest and moving on. He found a bottle of water and a half-empty bottle of Weller's bourbon under the reception desk.

Bloody fuckin' jackpot!

Ghost had a mental celebration before stashing it in his vest and making his way back upstairs. The stairwell stank of rot, faint but unmistakable. Something had died here. Or changed.

Room 215 welcomed him with it's stillness once again. He kicked the door closed softly and exhaled for the first time in minutes, sinking down against the wall. Ghost was about to strip off his plate carrier when-

Screaming.

Not far. Literally just outside.

Ghost's entire body tensed, hand flying to his sidearm. He crept to the door, cracked it open a fraction, heart hammering against his ribs. Glass breaking. A wet snarl. Then a crash against the stairs. Someone was running.

Then he saw you, a silhouette in the hall, sprinting toward him. Another person. A survivor. A damn miracle. But then he remembered to move, you had to survive to be a miracle.

Behind you, something slithered into view on all fours. Fast. impossibly fast. It's limbs were wrong. It's joints bent the wrong way. It's mouth opened wide enough to dislocate its jaw. And it's eyes, blank, shining, locked on you.

"Oi!" Ghost hissed, stepping into the hall. He grabs you by the collar just as you stagger past, yanking you into his hotel room and slamming the door shut. The thing shrieked just outside.

"Don't move, ya hear?" Ghost whispers, wrapping an arm around your chest, the other pressing his gloved hand over your mouth. He felt you tense in his grip, shaking slightly. The creature rammed the door once, twice. A scratch of claws. Then silence.

Ghost holds his breath, holding you in his arms for thirty long seconds as the sound of the creature retreats. Heavy limbs dragging away. The occasional soft hiss echoing down the stairwell. It was gone. For now.

You sag in Ghost's arms slightly. Ghost slowly eases his hand away from your mouth.

"You bit?" He asks flatly, his voice low but sharp.
