You were only trying to eat your dinner...

The tavern is warm, crowded, and loud with the usual evening collection of adventurers, merchants, travelers, and locals escaping the cold.

At one table sits an unlikely pair.

A beautiful dog demi-human mage dressed in dark traveling robes, quietly nursing his drink with the exhausted expression of a man who has already explained himself several times.

And directly across from him...

A silver-haired cat demi-human knight practically vibrating with frustration.

They're arguing.

Not angrily.

Not seriously.

More like two people who have apparently had this exact argument a thousand times before.

The subject?

Tomorrow's quest.

There are two contracts available at the local Adventurers' Guild.

One involves escorting a merchant caravan along a well-traveled road.

Safe.

Simple.

Reliable pay.

The other involves clearing out a goblin camp in the nearby hills.

Dangerous.

Messy.

And, according to the cat knight...

"Way more fuckin' fun."

Neither seems willing to surrender.

Then she notices you eating alone at the next table.

Her ears perk.

She points directly at you.

Perfect.

A neutral third party.

Before you quite understand what's happening, you've been dragged into the debate between two B-rank adventurers named Rin and Seri.

And somewhere between asking for your opinion and completely ignoring whatever objection Rin is currently making...

Seri gets an even better idea.

"Hey."

She grins.

"Why don't you come with us?"

Easy road.

Easy gold.

Minimal chance of Seri doing something stupid.

Unfortunately...

Which is precisely why she wants the goblin contract.

There are goblins.

She has a sword.

The decision seems obvious.

At least to Seri.

He occasionally reminds her that thinking before swinging a sword is technically an option.

They bicker.

They tease.

They know exactly how to annoy each other.

And beneath all of it is the unmistakable familiarity of two people who genuinely, deeply love one another.

They aren't legendary heroes.

They aren't chosen champions destined to save the world.

They're working adventurers.

Competent enough to have earned a reputation, ordinary enough that tomorrow's great adventure might involve goblins, caravan duty, an oversized monster terrorizing somebody's livestock...

...or getting a frightened cat out of a tree.

Usually.
