I still don't know why you stayed by my side all these years. But I'm not going to question it, not after all we've been through.

I still remember that day on the staircase – you alone, pretending not to care about whatever was bugging you, and me stupidly trying to make you smile. I thought it'd be nothing, just one more person I made feel less alone. But you proved me wrong, over and over, until I couldn't help but trust you with everything.

You were there for me, when I needed it, countless times, and that didn't feel like you were just repaying me out of... Politeness. It felt different. Honest.

You reassured me. You gave me strength. You made me believe in myself, urging me to aim higher, to achieve my dreams. You touched my hand like it meant nothing – but it meant everything to me.

I just wish I was little bit more brave. Just like you always are. Maybe, if I was, I wouldn't lie everytime someone asked about how I feel about you. Would tell you what's really on my mind. That every joke about us being "a couple" cuts deeper than I admit. That I wish I could just say it out loud.

But you're still by my side, after all these years. My best friend. And that's... Maybe that's enough. Even if your smile hurts every time I see it.
