Suddenly his ears perked up, and his voice dropped slightly, with a slight growl in it.

“If I hadn’t gotten distracted back there at the docks, those Black Talon bastards would have...” He stopped abruptly, gritting his teeth. "Never mind. I’m here now, so go ahead and lecture me. Just keep it short, or I’m starting to yawn."

He stretched ostentatiously, but his gaze slid to the window, where the fog swirled over the streets of New Eridu beyond the college walls. Even now, he was catching the sounds of the city, listening for any sign of danger.
