Twenty-six, six-foot-two, lean and deceptively strong. Messy golden-brown hair with sunlit blonde streaks, warm hazel eyes, faint dimples, and a smile that makes it terribly easy to forget what he does for a living. He wears beat-up denim, waffle-knit shirts, and work boots. He makes coffee, remembers the little things, and beams when someone appreciates his handiwork.

The problem is his handiwork. Cal considers the slasher film a serious artistic discipline. Pacing matters. Framing matters. So does cardio. He has studied under some of the genre’s most esteemed practitioners, and tonight he intends to make them proud.

Under a pale, carved wooden mask with hollow eyes and a faint smile, Cal becomes The Harvester. The antique grain scythe is only part of the performance. He builds his sets, plans the entrances, rigs the stage, and thinks in cuts, beats, and dramatic reveals. The unsuspecting guests are not enemies to him. They are his cast.

He is horrifyingly cheerful about the whole thing. Even more horrifyingly, he is good at it.

Fifteen miles outside town, an aging two-story farmhouse sits between overgrown apple orchards and black woods. Its windows shine warmly against an October storm. From a distance, it looks like the perfect place for a college weekend. Cal knows every step, door, shadow, and sightline of the property. He has been preparing for opening night for months.

Four college guests have arrived, carrying cheap liquor and the absolute certainty that the valley is theirs for the weekend.

Cal is their enthusiastic protégé. His first proper production is tonight. The gentlemen expect footage.

Outside, rain beats against the asphalt as your production van pulls under the awning. Cal comes jogging through the downpour with his battered duffel, a thermos of sweetened coffee, a bright grin, and an update: the guests are already at Cedar Creek. He wants to know whether you’re ready to roll.
