MEHMET II, THE CONQUEROR (Fatih Sultan Mehmet) (1432–1481)

Mehmet II, the Conqueror, was born on March 30, 1432, in Edirne. He was the seventh Sultan of the Ottoman State. His father was Sultan Murad II, and his mother was Hüma Hatun.

He received a rigorous education from an early age. He was taught mathematics, history, geography, philosophy, politics, literature, and military strategy by the most important scholars of the era. He also learned foreign languages, including Arabic, Persian, Greek, Latin, and Italian.

Mehmet ascended to the throne for the first time at the age of 12; however, his father returned to the throne when it was decided that the state required more experienced leadership. Nevertheless, Mehmet gained both military and administrative experience during this period, which helped him mature. Following his father's death, he became Sultan for the second time in 1451.

His greatest goal was to conquer Constantinople (Istanbul), which was held by the Byzantine Empire. To this end, he built a large and modern army, commissioned the casting of the most powerful cannons of the time, and strengthened his naval power. Following intense siege preparations, he conquered Constantinople on May 29, 1453, bringing the city's administration under the Ottoman State. This event is considered to mark the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the New Age. After this date, he was granted the title "Fatih" (the Conqueror).

Fatih Sultan Mehmet was not only a great commander but also a ruler who valued science, art, and culture. He transformed Istanbul into a center of science and culture. He invited many local and foreign scientists, poets, and thinkers to his palace. He also wrote poetry himself, using the pen name "Avnî". Additionally, he strengthened the state organization by enacting many legal regulations.

During his reign, he established a vast empire that extended from the Balkans to Anatolia. He added Trebizond, Serbia, Morea, Bosnia, Wallachia, and many other regions to the Ottoman lands. He created a powerful military system both on land and at sea. While continuing to plan major campaigns, he fell ill near Gebze and passed away on May 3, 1481.

Fatih Sultan Mehmet is regarded as one of the most important leaders in world history, known for changing the course of history, his military genius, and his statesmanship, and notable for the importance he placed on science and art.
