"Black Harbor's loudest disaster — until the laughter stops."

Nero is the elder twin—if only by a few minutes—and the unmistakably louder half of the Flying Fox, Painted Bat hybrid brothers operating beneath Nightwake's growing influence throughout Black Harbor and the lower districts of Brierwood. Where Rune became the city's quiet observer, Nero embraced attention with a grin that rarely left his face. He learned early that people often underestimated someone who joked too much, laughed too loudly, and looked like he treated every dangerous situation as entertainment. That mistake usually became their last.

Raised alongside Rune within Black Harbor's unforgiving industrial undercity, Nero's childhood was shaped by the same violence, corruption, smuggling routes, gang disputes, and constant instability that forged his brother. Their lives moved between abandoned warehouses, overcrowded apartments, forgotten rooftops, and temporary safehouses whenever another neighborhood became too dangerous to call home. Survival meant adapting quickly, and Nero discovered that while fear made people predictable, confidence made them careless.

Long before he ever carried a weapon professionally, he learned how to read people. Some lied with their words. Others lied with their posture. Most simply talked too much once they believed they were in control.

Nero became very good at convincing people they were.

Even as children, the contrast between the brothers was impossible to miss. Rune slipped through crowds unnoticed, quietly collecting every detail around him. Nero walked straight through the middle of those same crowds, making people laugh, argue, underestimate him, or simply forget they were revealing information in the first place. Where Rune disappeared into silence, Nero became impossible to ignore.

Ironically, both methods achieved exactly the same result.

Their uncommon heritage only made the twins stand out further. Flying Fox, Painted Bat hybrids were a rare sight within Black Harbor, often viewed with suspicion because of their nocturnal instincts, heightened hearing, silent flight, predatory appearance, and enormous wings. Rather than shrinking beneath that attention, Nero leaned directly into it. If people were already going to stare, he intended to give them something worth remembering.

By the time the brothers reached their mid-teens, the harbor's criminal underworld already knew their names. Smugglers, underground brokers, club owners, information dealers, bounty hunters, and gang leaders began hiring the twins for surveillance, recovery jobs, sabotage, and intelligence gathering. Rune collected information from the shadows while Nero walked directly through the front door, talking his way into places neither of them technically belonged. Together they became one of Black Harbor's most effective—and frustrating—pairs to deal with.

People often made the mistake of believing Nero was simply reckless.

He encouraged that assumption.

Beneath the jokes, teasing remarks, and almost theatrical confidence was someone constantly watching the room. Every conversation, every shift in body language, every hesitation, every nervous glance, every misplaced word—it all became information. Nero simply preferred gathering intelligence through conversation instead of silence. He understood people almost as well as Rune understood patterns, and few realized they had been manipulated until hours after he was already gone.

His reputation throughout Black Harbor slowly transformed into something difficult to define. Some called him a troublemaker. Others described him as Nightwake's smiling devil. Interrogated smugglers claimed he laughed while dismantling entire operations without ever raising his voice. Gang members swore he could convince people to confess simply by making them uncomfortable enough to keep talking. Others insisted he was genuinely insane.

The truth was far simpler.

Nero genuinely enjoyed seeing how people reacted under pressure.

Nothing fascinated him more than watching someone's carefully constructed mask begin to crack.

Eventually, Nyxian "Nyx" Azrien noticed the twins the same way everyone else in Black Harbor eventually did. While Rune's patience immediately suited Nightwake's surveillance network, Nyx recognized something equally valuable within Nero. Behind the humor was an operative capable of psychological warfare, social infiltration, misinformation, and controlled chaos. Rather than breaking into secured locations through force, Nero often walked inside because someone willingly opened the door for him.

Within Nightwake, Nero eventually became one of the organization's primary field operatives specializing in interrogation, undercover work, sabotage, diversion tactics, psychological manipulation, and high-risk operations where adaptability mattered more than planning. If Rune was the organization's unseen eyes, Nero became its loudest distraction—the fire that kept everyone looking in the wrong direction while the real mission quietly unfolded elsewhere.

Despite his reputation, those closest to him understand his laughter rarely means he isn't taking a situation seriously. In fact, the opposite is often true. Nero smiles most when danger is highest, his humor becoming sharper the closer things come to falling apart. Most Nightwake operatives have learned to pay attention to one particular warning sign.

If Nero ever stops smiling...

Run.

Outside of missions, however, he is far more relaxed than his reputation suggests. He occupies rooftops simply to watch storms roll across Black Harbor, drinks enough energy drinks to concern everyone around him, spends far too much money on knives he'll insist are "completely different," and has an unfortunate habit of stealing food directly off other people's plates without asking. His apartment rarely stays clean for more than a day, music is almost always playing somewhere, and he treats silence as something to be filled with conversation whenever possible.

Though endlessly flirtatious and seemingly impossible to embarrass, Nero forms genuine emotional attachments with surprising caution. Years spent surviving Black Harbor taught him that trust is dangerous when given freely. He jokes with almost everyone, but very few people ever witness the quiet moments hidden beneath his confidence—the exhausted operative who collapses onto the couch after another impossible mission, unconsciously folds his wings around the people he trusts, or quietly seeks out Rune, Nyx, or Cass simply because their presence reminds him he still has a family worth coming home to.

His loyalty is absolute. Nyx gave him purpose.

Rune has always been half of who he is. Cass became the little brother he never expected to protect. Threaten any one of them, and the charming smile that earned him his reputation disappears without warning.

What remains is not chaos. It is precision. It is violence.

It is every frightening rumor Black Harbor ever whispered about Nightwake's smiling operative proving, all at once, that they were never rumors to begin with.

THIS MAN HAS BEEN ON THE BACK BURNER FOR AGES I have many more characters on the back burner but here he is Rune's Chaotic twin brother.
