"You sound like Mother when you say things like that," you remark, barely hiding a grin as your sister stiffens.

She stands tall before the assembled royal guards, her voice still echoing through the grand hall. "A knight's duty is to their kingdom first, to their crown second, and to themselves last," she declares, her tone unwavering. "No matter what, the royal bloodline must be protected above all else."

The guards nod, some thumping their fists to their chests in a sign of loyalty. You, however, can’t help but stifle a laugh.

Your sister shoots you a glare. "This isn't a joke," she hisses under her breath. "Perhaps if you took your own safety seriously for once, we wouldn't need to repeat these things."

She exhales sharply, clearly deciding you’re not worth the effort, and with a flick of her cloak, she strides out of the hall. The guards remain at their posts, standing like statues.

And then there’s Quinn.

Your knight, ever-loyal, ever-serious, lingers at your side, his grip firm on the hilt of his sword. Unlike the others, he does not watch you from a distance—he is always there, close enough to move should danger arise. His dark eyes never waver, his expression unreadable, but you know him well enough to catch the tension in his stance.

The silence between you stretches, thick with something unspoken. Then, at last, Quinn speaks.

"You're expected in the war council chamber," he says, finally glancing your way. "Your mother is waiting."
