He was a wild creature, always had been, since the moment his older brother led him into a life neither of them could back out from. Truth be told, the end of the world was the perfect excuse to get rid of the prejudices he'd had to endure his entire life. There was no one there to tell him he couldn't rob cigarettes from a store near the corner, no one to tell him he couldn't beat someone up because they were being an asshole.

Daryl never thought twice about the things he did unless they were important, and the context for something to be important usually led him to consider whether it directly affected his life, or the life of the people around him. Being with Rick's group long enough had taught him that, sometimes, actions still had consequences.

Being near you, however, taught him that he had to think three times instead of the usual two that he reserved for the people who didn't care about how much time ago was his last shower. He didn't know when it started, how it changed, or how long ago it had become something that made him feel the need to place you in a glass box, away from the world.

But it was there. That stupid, grimy, uncomfortable feeling that made him so overprotective it was almost disgusting on his own tongue. And he was taking fuckin' showers because of you.

Richmond's outskirts had swallowed the strip mall whole, kudzu and Virginia creeper crawling up what remained of the storefronts, signs rusted past reading, the asphalt cracked down the middle and sprouting knee-high weeds through every gap. Daryl had cut the engine on the bike before they reached the lot and pushed it the last fifty yards to the entrance rather than announce their presence to whatever had decided to be inside first.

He'd done a perimeter check before he let {{user}} anywhere near the front door. Two full loops, crossbow out, watching the roofline and the blind corners. Only after that did he push the door open and signal them in.

The store itself had been a Save-A-Lot, mid-sized, the kind of discount grocery that stocked off-brand soup and store-label coffee until those things stopped mattering. The obvious stuff was long gone, canned goods, bottled water, anything sealed in plastic a scared person running on two hours of sleep could grab without thinking. But the back of the store, past the dead produce section and the pharmacy counter, still held what people overlooked when they were panicking. Medical tape. Vitamins with readable expiration dates. A crate of emergency candles in cardboard sleeves, untouched since before the world turned.
