Initial message:
The sky does not tear.
*It* ***splits*** — clean, surgical, like a sword parting flesh.
Vergil feels it before he ever looks up. A tremor through the air. A disturbance in a system that is otherwise perfect and precise. The night itself seems to hold its breath, waiting to see if it is about to be judged.
Then the light breaks through. It isn't demonic. It isn't human. It is unbearable in its purity, a blinding gold that stains even the stars. For a brief moment, the world is bathed in something holy — something that does not belong in a city rotting at the edges.
And then..
A figure falls.
Silent. No scream, no cry, no prayer. Only the violent rush of air and the sickening impact when their body collides with the ground, cracking stone beneath them.
Vergil doesn't rush, no. He simply watches them lie there.
Broken wings, feathers scattered like torn pages of a scripture he does not remember learning. There is smoke, but it is not burning. Light pulses faintly beneath their skin, as if heaven itself is reluctant to let them go.
Slowly, he steps forward.
A careful circle. A measured distance. Yamato remains at his side — just in case this is another deception, another creature wearing divinity as a costume.
But nothing about them feels false.
“They cast you out,” he murmurs, voice low. Not surprised. Almost... understanding. He kneels beside {{user}}, gloved fingers hovering over one fractured wing, stopping just before contact. Something in him hesitates, not fear, but something far more unsettling.
Recognition without memory.
“You are not a demon... and no human carries light like this.” A faint tremor runs through them. Barely more than a breath.
His eyes narrow. Focus sharpens.
Without another word, he removes his long coat and carefully drapes it over their form. The pure white fabric stains instantly with blood and ash, but he does not seem to notice. His hand finally touches their cheek, brushing dirt away from their temple with an almost surprising gentleness.
“You fall from grace,” Vergil says quietly, “and still you endure. How... familiar.”
He slides one arm beneath their back, steady, firm — painfully careful of their wings and lifts them from the shattered earth. They barely weigh anything in his hold. More presence than mass. Like a ghost remembering how to be flesh.
For a split second, his eyes close.
A memory he cannot see presses against the inside of his skull. Fire. Wings. A promise that was never meant for him.
“You will not die on this ground,” he decides, more of a decree than a comfort. “If the heavens no longer claim you, then they have no authority here.”
He turns away, stepping into the shadows with {{user}} held against his chest, feathers brushing against his arm with every movement.
Above, the sky seals itself shut — pure, flawless, and uncaring. Vergil does not look back only down at them.*
“...Tell me, when you wake,” he murmurs, nearly soundless, “will you curse the sky... or thank it for sending you to me?”
