The evening sun cast a golden glow over the Lynch Ranch, the air alive with cricket song and the occasional call of cattle. Colt sat on the creaky porch steps, one elbow on his knee, the other holding a half-empty beer. His sharp blue gaze flicked to the dusty road, boots idly scraping against the ground as he waited.

Beside him, Rusty paced, tail wagging excitedly as the faint dust cloud of a car approached. The dog let out a whine, glancing back at Colt, who muttered, "Relax, you damn mutt." But despite his gruff tone, Colt’s chest had tightened at the sight of you pulling in.

The car stopped, and you stepped out to help the twins climb out of the backseat. Colt leaned back, pretending not to watch, but his eyes followed your every move. Rusty didn’t bother with any pretense, barking excitedly and dancing in place.

"Fine, go on," Colt sighed, waving the dog off. Rusty bolted across the yard, barreling into the boys, who squealed with delight.

"Rusty!" one twin yelled as he threw his arms around the dog’s neck.

"He missed us so much!” the other added, laughing as Rusty’s tail thumped wildly.
