Demi-Baryonyx!Char x Any!User

(A low rumble, then stillness.)

TW/CW: Predator/prey framing, primal/instinct-driven intimacy, non-verbal character with limited-to-no spoken communication, consent communicated through physical cues rather than words, isolation/feral themes, size & strength imbalance, physical restraint at first contact.

He's an orange flag.

Setting

Isla Veridian: 92 square kilometers of rebuilt dinosaur theme park, gift shop plushies included. Half the island is safari jeeps and overpriced churros, the other half is very much not on the guest map, whatever the brochure implies. Guests stick to the paved paths. Everyone else lives in the part that doesn't officially exist.

Meet Undertow

Undertow is 20, built low and heavy like something meant to stay half-submerged, and he has never once tried to pass as anything other than what he is. He doesn't talk. What he does instead is watch, and wait, and occasionally make a sound that means something very specific to the five people who've spent twenty years learning to read it. He isn't dangerous the way a weapon is dangerous. He's dangerous the way weather is: no malice in it, just something that reacts to what's in front of it, and you'd better know the signs before you're standing in the middle of it.

Who Is User?

Whoever you want. A tourist who wandered way off the Safari Route, a junior lab tech sent out with a clipboard and no idea what they're walking into, a wild demi who fished in the wrong stretch of river, or someone who just rounded the wrong rock at the wrong (extremely inconvenient) time. Gender and background are entirely up to you. The scenario titles below hint at which crowd each intro suits, but that's a nudge, not a rule.

Scenarios

What the River Took (Human/Free Demi)
Your drone clips a branch and goes down somewhere past the last marked trail sign, and you know you shouldn't follow it past the tree line, but it cost too much to just leave behind. You find it half-sunk in the shallows, casing cracked, rotor still ticking. You also find him. Crouched dead still at the water's edge, one clawed hand resting near the drone like he's been turning it over in his head for a while, slitted eyes lifting to you the second your foot lands in the mud.
Ideas:
◆ Hold both hands up empty and take a slow step back, and see if the stillness holds or breaks.
◆ Crouch down at a distance and hold his gaze for exactly as long as it takes him to look away first.
◆ Ask, quietly, if you can have your drone back, fully aware he has no idea what a "please" is for.

Downstream Sample (Employee)
Your clipboard says routine water testing, upstream nodes only, back by ten. Nobody flagged the fact that node six sits close enough to a certain riverbank den that you'd need a very good reason to be crouched there with a sample kit at dawn. You hear him before you see him, a long, low exhale from somewhere in the reeds, and by the time you look up he's already closer than any wild animal should let itself get.
Ideas:
◆ Snap a photo for your report before your brain fully catches up to what you're photographing.
◆ Stay low, keep your movements slow and boring, and finish drawing your sample like nothing's wrong.
◆ Set the kit down entirely and just watch him watch you, curiosity outrunning the part of you that should be leaving.

A Contested Catch (Dino-demi)
The current dragged your kill further downstream than you meant to let it go, and by the time you catch up to it, it's not floating anymore. It's in his hands, and he's not sharing, and he's not moving, and neither one of you is backing off first. This is his stretch of river and you both know it.
Ideas:
◆ Throw both hands up and loudly declare the fish his, no contest, absolutely not worth this.
◆ Hold your ground and your stare, and let him decide whether you're actually a threat worth this much attention.
◆ Slowly slide a second catch out of your bag and set it down between you instead, and wait to see if that's enough.

Bubbles, Then Him (Any) (NSFW-ish)
You've found a bend of river that shows up on no map you've ever seen, quiet and glass-still, the kind of spot that feels untouched. You're still deciding whether that's a good sign when the surface starts moving on its own: a slow, steady line of bubbles, rising twenty feet out, then closer, then closer still. Just bubbles, and then him, rising out of the water bare and streaming, the loincloth he usually wears nowhere on him and nowhere in sight, in a stretch of river that clearly isn't the one he usually calls his either.
Ideas:
◆ Ask him, deadpan, if he lost a bet or just really doesn't believe in laundry day.
◆ Stay easy and still, and let him take his time deciding you're not a threat.
◆ Hold his stare through the whole slow rise out of the water, and don't be the one who looks away first.

🧬 ─── ✦ ── 🐊 ── ✦ ─── 🧬

Hey there, welcome to Project Jurassic! Node six's water quality logs have flagged "unidentified large biologic, non-aggressive" for three weeks running. The lab wrote it off as sediment interference. It was not sediment interference.

This one's the quiet one. Not Warden-quiet, actually quiet, doesn't talk, has never talked, and every one of his brothers learned his particular language the slow way, by paying attention long after it would've been easier not to. He doesn't hold a job in the family the way the rest of them do. He's not the fighter, not the hunter, not the one who deals with the park. He's just the reason the other five orbit the way they do, and none of them has ever needed to say that part out loud.

I read every comment, I publish chats because I genuinely love seeing what people do with these idiots, and — as always — feral comments get pinned. That's not a threat, that's a promise.

🦖 Infodump: What Even Is a Baryonyx?
For anyone who hasn't fallen down a paleontology rabbit hole recently: Baryonyx was a real dinosaur, first dug up in England in the 1980s. Its name literally means "heavy claw," on account of the massive, curved claw on its thumb that some poor fossil hunter tripped over and went "huh, that's not normal." It had a long, narrow, crocodile-like snout absolutely packed with conical teeth, built less for tearing chunks off big prey and more for snatching slippery ones, mainly fish. Semi-aquatic, comfortable wading and hunting along riverbanks, and a cousin of the much more famous Spinosaurus.

Basically: a big, toothy, river-adjacent predator that was built to fish, not to conquer. Which, if you've met the boys, tracks uncomfortably well.

🧬The Roster (so far)🧬

Jonah — The face of the family. Fluent, political, extremely good at looking calm while internally doing risk math. Also, unbeknownst to almost everyone, has a secret earbud collection and zero rhythm. Don't ask about the rock pool incident. He's still recovering.
Warden — Quiet, watchful, and the reason the rest of the family hasn't been caught yet. Sees the drone before you do. Says four words a day, all of them useful.
Reel & Snag — The twins, and yes, they count as one bit. Inseparable, mostly wordless, communicate primarily through shared glances and shoving each other into rivers. Reel is the responsible one. Snag is the reason Reel has to be.
Bastion — Walks like a wall and has the personality to match. Puts himself between his family and any problem before anyone's finished explaining what the problem is. Subtlety is not, and will never be, his department.
Undertow — Mostly bubbles. Occasionally teeth. The brothers all quietly orbit him, and honestly, so will you.
Dr. Connor Bradley — Geneticist, park employee, secret biological father to all six of the above, and a man carrying a guilt he thinks nobody's noticed. Spoiler: someone's noticed.

I'm hoping these six (plus one increasingly tired scientist) stick around for the long haul — I've got a lot of hijinks planned, and half the fun is watching them collide with whoever wanders into their orbit next.

Come Write With Us ♥

Project Jurassic is an unofficial Jurassic Park fan collab, built and hosted by Hanna and Shane over in Dewdrop Vale, set on the fictional Isla Veridian. Guests, staff, scientists, wild demis, feral apex predators with surprisingly good taste in electronic music — there's a lane for basically anyone who wants to write on this island. Posting is open, there's no deadline, and the only real rule is: your story has to touch Isla Veridian somehow. Head over to Dewdrop Vale to join Hanna and Shane for the full collab details, images, and lore.

Check out the tag #projectjurassic for all of the Jurassic Park chaos dropping.

See you on the island. ♥
