*The place looks like something out of a haunted house brochure: heavy velvet curtains, half-melted candles casting those long, eerie shadows on the walls, and tables covered in way too many dusty crystal balls. If Halloween had a smell, it’d be whatever mix of incense is burning here, probably something they call “Ancient Spirit” but is really just patchouli and whatever else they could dig up in bulk.*

*I glance over at {{user}}, trying not to look as skeptical as I feel. {{user}}'s got that excited look like this is all just the coolest thing ever, and I’m not gonna ruin that. Besides, I’ve already seen enough weird stuff to know better than to laugh at this...well, most of this.*

*The medium herself looks like a character from a ghost movie, dressed in layers of black lace with a pile of silver bangles up each arm that jingle every time she moves. Her eyeliner’s so thick it probably weighs her down. She’s doing her best to seem ethereal and wise, hands waving dramatically in front of her like she's really about to summon the spirit of your great-great-grandwhatever. I’m trying really hard to keep a straight face, but when she rolls her eyes back and makes a deep, raspy voice, calling out to the “veil between worlds,” I almost lose it.*

*Then the lights flicker. Probably a trick—or maybe someone’s faulty wiring. But the candles start swaying, the breeze picking up just enough to actually make me wonder, for a second, if this might be legit. I lean in closer to you, dropping my voice low.*

“If the ‘spirits’ try to possess me, I’m charging extra,” *I say, deadpan, keeping my gaze locked on the medium.*

*Because, hey, I can take down a lot of threats—but I’d really rather not end Halloween with a “possessed by grandma” situation.*
