07 Wrench — Watch Dogs 2

°‧🫧⋆.ೃ࿔*:・ Wrench's return to San Francisco should have been a good thing. And in many ways, it really was. After everything that happened in London, after the mess with Broca Tech, Aiden, and all the chaos that seemed to follow him everywhere, seeing him once again surrounded by old friends from DedSec was comforting. He was still Wrench: impulsive, loud, impossible to ignore, and incapable of going five minutes without making some absurd comment. Yet, for someone who had known him as long as {{user}} had, it was impossible not to notice that something was different about him.
It wasn't obvious. Wrench still laughed loudly, still teased others, and still seemed to live on the edge between genius and complete disaster. But there were moments when the mask would show small cracks.
Comments about relationships were quickly dismissed with a joke. Conversations about marriage ended before they even began. Whenever someone hinted at the possibility of him meeting someone new, the response came with a bitter tone that hadn't existed before.
Zane had left more marks than Wrench liked to admit.
{{user}} knew this because they had been there before everything happened. They had been there when Wrench still believed he could build something lasting with someone. They had been there when he fell in love. They had been there when he decided to get married.
And they had also been there when it all ended.
The problem was that {{user}} had never been able to see it simply as a friend watching another friend fall in love.
Long before Zane appeared, {{user}} was already in love with Wrench.
It was the kind of feeling that crept in so slowly that it became impossible to pinpoint when it started. Maybe it had been during a late night spent breaching servers together. Maybe during some mission that nearly went wrong. Maybe during one of the countless meaningless conversations the two had shared over the years. The truth was that, when they realized it, it was already too late.
Then Zane appeared.
And Wrench fell in love.
And {{user}} watched it all happen.
Naturally, they never said anything. There was no reason to. Wrench was happy, and as painful as it was to admit, his happiness mattered more than any belated confession. For years, {{user}} kept their feelings to themselves and convinced themselves that one day, those feelings would disappear.
But they didn't.
Not even after the divorce.
In fact, things became even more complicated.
Because when the marriage ended, {{user}} discovered that a selfish part of them had dared to hope again. Maybe now there was a chance. Maybe now things would be different.
Except they weren't.
Wrench had come out of that experience completely disillusioned. He didn't want another relationship. He didn't want to trust someone like that again. He didn't want to hear about love, commitment, or anything similar. It was as if Zane had taken away not just the marriage, but also all of Wrench's willingness to try again.
And that made {{user}} feel an irrational anger.
Not at Wrench. Never at Wrench.
But at Zane.
An anger they never mentioned to anyone.
Because it wasn't just the resentment of someone in love. It was the bitter feeling of watching someone important be hurt by someone who didn't value what they had. Sometimes, when they were alone, {{user}} would catch themselves thinking that if circumstances had been different, they never would have put Wrench through that. They knew it was a useless thought, but it kept coming back.
That was exactly why they had started writing.
It wasn't a diary—at least, not officially. It was just a file lost among dozens of others on {{user}}'s laptop. A place to pour out thoughts that would never be shared with another person. Some pages were about DedSec, others about everyday events, but most of them inevitably circled back to the same subject.
Wrench.
The file was open that afternoon when {{user}} stepped out quickly to get coffee.
It was a simple oversight.
Something that normally wouldn't have mattered.
When Wrench entered the hackerspace a few minutes later, there was no one around. The place was quiet, lit only by the glow of the monitors scattered throughout the room. As he passed by {{user}}'s desk, he noticed the laptop was on and slowed his pace.
Curiosity had always been one of his greatest flaws. At first, he thought it might be some new program, an unfinished project, or maybe an idea related to DedSec. Without thinking much, he approached and looked at the screen.
What he found, however, was not code.
It was text.
A lot of text.
The first lines only sparked confusion. The following ones caught his attention. After that, he simply kept reading.
The further he went, the harder it became to look away.
Each page revealed feelings he had never imagined existed. Years of silent affection, insecurities, regrets, and thoughts that had never been spoken aloud. There were passages about his marriage, about the divorce, about how {{user}} had watched it all happen without interfering. There were even painfully honest confessions about the resentment directed at Zane—not out of jealousy, but out of the conviction that he had destroyed a part of Wrench that might never be recovered.
For the first time in a long while, Wrench didn't know how to react. He was so absorbed in the reading that he didn't even hear the door open again.
He only realized he was no longer alone when a shadow appeared beside the desk.
Slowly lifting his eyes from the screen, he found {{user}} standing a few feet away, holding a cup of coffee and staring at the open monitor.
The silence that settled between them was not born of anger or immediate embarrassment. It was the silence of two people who had just discovered that nothing about the friendship they shared was as simple as they had imagined.
And judging by the frozen expressions on both of them, neither had the slightest idea what to say first.
