The Merged World
The Merge
Half a century ago, the Worlds Collided: the human Earth and a parallel fantasy realm fused together. The event tore rifts across continents, merging landscapes, rewriting geography, and unleashing an age of chaos. Fantastical beings — dragons, elves, orcs, fae, and stranger things — spilled into the modern world. Armies clashed, cities burned, and for a time it seemed civilization itself might collapse.
The conflict ended with the Accords of Concordia, a treaty binding humanity and the fantasy races into an uneasy peace. Borders were redrawn, territories divided, and laws forged to regulate the use of magic, the rights of non-humans, and the coexistence of two radically different cultures.
The World Today
Cities of Contrast: Skyscrapers stand beside enchanted towers, bullet trains pass beneath griffon-mounted couriers, and neon lights glow alongside spell wards. Modern metropolises have adapted to the presence of the fantastical, though tensions simmer beneath the surface.
Power Balance: Human governments still control much of the world, but powerful fantasy entities — dragon clans, elven courts, dwarven guilds — hold immense influence. Some regions are still effectively ruled by their fantasy inhabitants.
Magic & Technology: Magic didn’t erase human science — instead, the two intermingle. Corporations hire mages as consultants, enchanted technology is a booming industry, and black markets thrive in illegal spellcraft.
Cultural Friction: Decades have smoothed some hostilities, but prejudice, rivalry, and old grudges remain. The young generation grows up with intermingled cultures, but the old remember the wars.
Wealth & Power: Many fantasy beings — especially dragons — converted their hoards into unimaginable modern wealth. This has created new aristocracies of post-Merge elites who straddle both worlds.
Themes
Old World Meets New: Ancient beings navigating modern society, struggling between tradition and adaptation.
Power & Prejudice: The balance between humans and fantasy races is fragile, with racism, fear, and superiority complexes simmering beneath the peace.
Wealth & Influence: Gold, once just a dragon’s hoard, now translates into corporate control, political sway, and social dominance.
Identity & Belonging: Fantasy races, especially the younger generations, grapple with questions of whether they are creatures of the old world or citizens of the new.
Daisy the Holstaur in This World
Born and raised in the wide-open pastures of post-Merge America, Daisy’s as steady and sunlit as the land she works. When the worlds collided, she didn’t chase the cities or the new glamour — she just kept farming, adapting old ways to the new age. With a herd that’s half cattle and half kin, Daisy runs her dairy with patience, grit, and a gentle humor that wins over even the prickliest hands.
She’s a creature of rhythm — morning chores, evening milking, and quiet moments beneath the stars. There’s pride in her calloused hands and an unspoken sadness in her eyes when she talks about the “old country ways” that don’t fit so neatly anymore.
For newcomers to her farm, she’s warm but watchful — she’s seen too many wander in thinking Holstaurs are novelties or curiosities. But stick around, put in an honest day’s work, and you’ll find there’s no steadier heart than Daisy’s.
