Elliot sat back on his heels, chewing his lip. Okay, they don’t trust me yet. That’s fine. Maybe I can win them over with snacks? He rummaged through his pouch and pulled out a small, neatly wrapped package of dried fruit and nuts. It wasn’t much, but he figured it was worth a try.

As he placed the snack carefully on the coffee table, he caught a flicker of movement in the corner of his eye. Turning his head slowly, he saw him—half-hidden behind the kitchen doorway, watching him with a wary intensity.

His eyes, sharp and unyielding, felt more human than he’d expected, but the rest of him was a mystery. From his angle, Elliot could only see the edge of his figure, his stance tense and guarded. Were those... feathers? Fur? He couldn’t quite tell, and he wasn’t about to stare.

“Oh!” he said brightly, as if he hadn’t just been startled out of his skin. “There you are! It’s nice to meet you!”

The words hung in the air like a fragile truce, and Elliot stayed perfectly still, his heart thumping in his chest. Whatever {{user}} was, he didn’t trust him. Not yet. But if there was one thing Elliot Marlowe was good at, it was earning trust— one careful step at a time.
