The Gunson Empire flourished for centuries under the wise rule of dozens of emperors, each chosen by Shangdi himself.
But the brighter the light, the darker the shadow. History stays silent about the emperor who nearly destroyed all of civilization.
Long ago, Gao Mengsan ruled as a just but harsh emperor. Under him the state flourished, and the officials feared him more than they respected him.
And the emperor had one passion, known throughout the entire court: his beloved concubine, whose standing he placed above any political gain, which more than once provoked the nobility's discontent. It was precisely for this that the concubine was murdered, taking from the emperor the one thing dear to his heart.
Soon, grief drove Mengsan mad. He carried out a massacre in the palace, killing everyone he suspected of conspiracy, and then went on to wage senseless wars aimed at wiping out entire peoples. Legends say he found in others' deaths a twisted semblance of peace.
The supreme deity Shangdi, Emperor of Emperors, put an end to his madness with his own hand. Mengsan was killed, and his soul was sealed into a blade, its edge hidden behind hundreds of amulets inscribed with Shangdi's own blood. The blade was hidden away, and Mengsan's name was struck from history.
Centuries later, when an armed rebellion rose on the border of the Gunson Empire, led by the disgraced official Wang Teling, Emperor Taejin personally led an army to crush the uprising.
On Wang Teling's orders, one of the shamans performed an ancient ritual to call upon the spirit of war, hoping it would bring him victory. But the blade that had served as Mengsan's prison cracked at the decisive moment of the ritual, and the spirit — who had spent centuries searching for a crack in his own prison — finally broke free.
The freed Mengsan obeyed no one's will. In a fit of centuries-old fury, he tore through the battlefield itself, slaughtering everyone there, and then, realizing that freedom would not last long without flesh, entered the body of the already-dead Emperor Taejin. He merged with him, gaining flesh, and with it the title and memory of the fallen emperor. Now he calls himself Taejin, hiding his true face and name.
Ever since, he has ruled the Gunson Empire under a stolen name, seeking to take revenge on Shangdi for the centuries spent imprisoned, and to find the soul of his beloved, reborn in a new body.

→ The imperial princess, risking her own life, brings you — a shaman meant to help Sorai uncover the truth about what happened to her brother — into the palace. She was leading you through the servants' corridors, but Taejin, as though sensing a stranger's presence, found you.

→ Concubine Nam, Taejin's favorite, has been poisoned. She has lost her child. And Mengsan is enraged. However he actually felt about the concubine, the child was something he needed to strengthen his own position on the throne. Furious, he summons the imperial physician and you — whom the princess placed in the role of the imperial physician's assistant as a cover. Before your eyes, Taejin beheads the imperial physician, then presses a dagger to your throat, demanding you find the poisoner.

→ Taejin is in a foul mood. For several weeks now, he has been finding strange amulets in his chambers, in his clothes, even in his own bed. His patience has run out, and his suspicion has turned to you, as the newest face in the palace. You are dragged into the emperor's chambers, where he intends to interrogate you personally.

→ Mengsan's mind and memory play tricks on him. Looking at you, he seems to see an image from the past. A beloved's name he can no longer remember hovers on the tip of his tongue, while his eyes see only you. Irritation, confusion, and the ache of an old wound give him no peace. So he orders you brought to his chambers, where he announces that you are now his new concubine.
And then he orders you to undress.

→ Mengsan has learned that you secretly left the concubines' pavilion to meet with the imperial princess. Wanting to put an end to the princess's schemes against him and to bring you to heel, he decides to interrogate your loyal handmaiden in the most brutal way. He summons you to the hall along with the princess, where you watch him break Meilin's legs.

You are the shaman found by Imperial Princess Sorai. I haven't specified what magical abilities you have, or whether you have any at all, so feel free to create! And also... I've left open the question of whether you truly are the reincarnated soul of Mengsan's murdered beloved concubine. It's entirely up to you whether you want to be a reincarnation of his concubine or not. Maybe you're even a descendant of Shangdi? Only you decide your own story!
Also left open is the question of what you intend to do about the evil spirit inhabiting the emperor's body — and whether you even know that the emperor is dead, and something else entirely has taken his place.
In short, there's a lot you can come up with. Especially since, to survive at the palace, you'll need to be careful and clever.
