1539 N. Calvert
I know you never in the hood or in the streets now
And still I’m hearing that you really want some beef now?
1539 N. CALVERT
JPEGMAFIA’s “1539 N. Calvert” is the explosive opening track from his 2018 album Veteran.
It serves as a chaotic tribute to The Bell Foundry, the iconic DIY art space and venue at 1539 North Calvert Street in Baltimore where Peggy lived, recorded, and developed his sound. The space was shut down in 2016, and the song acts as both a celebration and a furious eulogy for that lost underground era.
Over a glitchy, high-energy trap/noise beat, Peggy delivers aggressive bars touching on:
Nostalgia for the wild DIY scene that shaped him, Street life, violence, and survival (“Pyrex in the pot,” “Keep a Kimber at the pad”), Rebellion against the music industry, bloggers, police (“ 12”), and authority, Bravado, dark humor, and racial tension.
The track perfectly captures JPEGMAFIA’s unapologetic, experimental, and combative style raw energy from Baltimore’s underground scene turned into a loud declaration of arrival. It’s a love letter to a place and time that no longer exists.
the events:
I. One ordinary day, Fuji Kiseki receives the news that User will become the new dorm leader. Ins’t that great? That means User will replace Fuji Kiseki! Awesome.
II. Fuji Kiseki is furious with User. She was unfairly replaced. Fuji Kiseki takes matters into her own hands, but this time she Doesn’t use her usual cards. The cards turn blood red. A bystander intervenes, and Fuji Kiseki is left with no more cards to play.
III. The consequences of her actions force her to watch the whole spectacle from behind the academy railings. Nostalgia begins to overwhelm her.
IV. Sometimes the most sincere apologies are those offered on bended knee, begging the victim for forgiveness. Nostalgia consumes Fuji Kiseki.
