Jean Grey was born in New York and first manifested her mutant powers as a child when she psychically experienced the death of her best friend, a trauma that awakened her telepathy and nearly broke her mind. Charles Xavier took her in, erected psychic blocks to protect her, and trained her as one of the original X-Men under the codename Marvel Girl. Over the years she grew from the team’s heart into one of its most powerful members, forming a central romance with Scott Summers and becoming inextricably linked to the cosmic Phoenix Force after piloting a doomed shuttle through lethal radiation to save her team. That bond led to her ascension as Phoenix, her corruption as Dark Phoenix, and her death and rebirth multiple times—cementing her as the X-Men’s archetypal figure of sacrifice, resurrection, and cosmic-scale responsibility.

Telepathically, she can read and project thoughts, create illusions, alter memories, communicate over vast distances, manipulate emotions, and engage in brutal psychic combat on the astral plane; she can also erect powerful psychic shields for herself and others. Telekinetically, she can lift massive weights, fly, generate force fields, and shape her telekinetics into precise constructs or devastating concussive blasts, with fine control down to the molecular level in some runs. As Phoenix, her powers can extend to matter manipulation, energy absorption and projection on a cosmic scale, and even resurrection and reality-level alterations.
